FIRST SONGS EVER - very diverse and unique dubstep - F4F!

Post by Saucedrop » Sun Jun 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Hey everybody! I've been making music for a little under a year, and here we have some of the first 'songs' I've ever made. Usually I focus heavily on ground-up production and don't spend much time on song structure, just melodies and technical aspects. But I've finally started to delve into some song structure, and think I have some really good ideas in here! Please let me know what you think, I'm trying to learn as much as I can, and would HIGHLY appreciate feedback or opinions in any form, whether technical or creative, preferably both! I will return all feedback! Very diverse tempos and styles in this sampler! Please, if you can't think of anything to say, just comment or whether you like the tunes or not!

NOTE: not all of these are finished songs, just samples of beginning structures.

also note, I do NOT have speakers, just headphones, so I am aware that there are porbably some hideous mixing mishaps. I appreciate all your help!

ALSO NOTE, the two in the middle I made in one night, so be gentle! the top and bottom two are much more complete.

Your tracks are all just a mess of frequencies.
Your midrange is so unfocused it just sounds noisy.
Do you know what you're trying to achieve??

Most of it sounds very sloppy.

Sorry if I'm being overly critical.
I just don't think folks should post everything and anything on SC.
Quality control is very important.
Do an A-B comparison of your favorite tune and one of yours.

I like the ideas in the first one alot, just work on getting some of those frequencies reined in a bit, Make sure the sub bass is nice and low, with the kick just above that (bass wise).

Maybe you should think about getting some monitors? Even really small monitors will be loads better than computer speakers.

^^ yes yes. I'm sure you can find some decent KRK or M-Audio monitors secondhand off craigslist (I bought my KRK RP8s 1st gen for $200 off craigslist!)

Thanks for your feedback! However, I think youre pretty ignorant about the creative process if you think I shouldnt post 'anything and everything' on SC. Are you afraid of bad music on SC? If I hadn't have put those on SC, I wouldn't have a chance to hear feedback like yours. So, are you expecting me to apologize for thinking my shitty music is worth feedback? And don't take a 'sloppy midrange' as me not knowing 'what to acheive'. It's more like I'm mixing out of headphones and have very little mixing experience. You're an asshole :D get off your high horse, "quality control" is some of the biggest bullshit I've ever heard about music. Quality is subjective, and what the hell do you even mean quality control? I should only post good shit? Then what am I asking for feedback for if I know it's good. I'm going to post it ALL to get feedback on it all. And just maybe I'm not as technically equipped or technically skilled to determine what is good or bad 'quality', so maybe I'll post on places like this to try and find out. You're a pretty big douche, sorry for insulting you with my sloppy midrange.

Thank you very much! And yes, I know I need monitors, I'm not hearing the same music you guys are hearing. I've NEVER heard any of my music out of monitors or any sort of worthy speakers. BUT I should be getting some in the next month, having some income now with summer festival season. I'll let you guys know when I get a chance to properly mix these!

Some great ideas in here and good song structures. I like the 4th track best. All I would say is learn some about mixing down.

Your percussion in all of your tunes is very boring, the actual sounds are very bland, try using ones or make your own.
Not really noticing any sub bass, which is kinda the point of dubstep.
Your midrangey tunes are very messy. The midrange noises take over everything and it doesn't flow very well in my opinion.
Your second tune isn't bad, just kinda dull, the percussion needs to give the tune some energy and the snare sounds very out of place imo.

All that melts away when the lights are down and the bass is up.

Every synth in here I made on my own, I don't ever use or even tweak presets. All the sounds are ground up. As for boring precussion, the music I'm making is primarily dance music, and at 70bpm percussion, you need simple percussion. I think most of this is just creative disagreements!

I'll agree that my midrange is sloppy, thank you very much for the feedback! And my sub is severely lacking, I don't have any speakers to synthesize any, and my headphones do not produce anyyy sort of sub-ranges to a point of full expression. Thanks a bunch!

I'm not really concerned with the 'point' of dubstep. I'm concerned about my lack of sub because I want a strong sub in there, not because thats what dubstep is about.

You should be careful when you are flaming people that are giving you feedback.

These people are only trying to help you out.

I can hear exactly what everyone else is trying to say and you seem to know what is 'wrong' with your tracks so why not delete the ones you already have work on them and upload the new ones. I think you have to understand there is a lot of hate towards anyone focusing on mid-range bass and always will be on this forum.

Your comments back have only made you look immature if your asking for feedback and you get bad feedback you should take that aboard and listen or ignore it.

I wont be listening to your music.

I wasn't upsept that his feedback was negative, it was naive and immature, and frankly, stupid. As was this one - first off, you didnt even talk about my songs. You mentioned how theres a lot of hate towards mid-range bass, which is just fucking stupid. Get over yourself, why are you insulted by my midranges? Its fucking music, its just art, it doesnt have to fit into your nice definitions of what dubstep is or what it should be.

And I DID thank him for his feedback that was constructive, if you were to actually read what I said. I was in no way insulted by his negative feedback, i appreciated his feedback althought it was negative (truly, i came here for negative feedback), but I felt other things he said are corrosive to electronic music. Narrow mindedness should never be a part of an artistic community, and there seems to be a lot here, from people like you. Funny how I'm the immature one here, when you're the one searching for parameters of what is or isnt music or dubstep or whatever, and then you end it with a pretentios "I won't be listening to your music." as if I give a fuuucckkkkk at all.

I'd say the biggest weakness would be tuning, I'd suggest working on that a bit more.

After that the bass is very powerful but the drums are being overpowered so either need to beef them up a bit more or eq out some of your bass to make room for them (or a bit of both)

With the soundcloud thing if you are starting out I would say post as much as you can and be prepared for a lot of crit. People are happy to receive constructive criticism but I say be grateful for whatever kinda crit you can get, it will break you down but it's what's needed to build things back up and make em stronger (kinda like army training I guess  )

I would post up your 5 best tracks on soundcloud to start with, when you come up with one that is better than any one of those 5 then replace it. They are still going to be weak but less weak. Then over time your arsenal will get better and better.

Good luck :4:

Thank you very much man! And thanks very much for the tuning comment, I had always been fishy about the cohesion of my instruments, I knew something wasnt right, and you are right totally right. And yes, I am aware that most of my kicks are drowned out, some pretty bad. I try and beef up my kicks as best I can (I literally cant beef them up anymore- any more saturation or eq'ing distorts it too much) and I sydechain to where it doesnt interupt the melody or the punch, and can't find a spot in the middle where the kick comes through yet my melody still has enough attack. I think more experienced eq'ing will do it, along with running a cleaner sub probably.

And I agree with you about the criticism, I very much appreciate it all, BUT when their perception of the creative merit behind my music transitions into a hater statement regarding the validity of my musical endeavors - thats not creative feedback, thats narrow-mindedness.
