Deadmau5 proves he is a tnuc, AGAIN.

Post by Liam92 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 3:45 pm

its no secret.  when it comes to “live” performance of EDM… that’s about the most it seems you can do anyway. It’s not about performance art, its not about talent either (really its not) In fact, let me do you and the rest of the EDM world button pushers who fuckin hate me for telling you how it is, a favor and let you all know how it is.

I think given about 1 hour of instruction, anyone with minimal knowledge of ableton and music tech in general could DO what im doing at a deadmau5 concert. Just like i think ANY DJ in the WORLD who can match a beat can do what “ANYONE else” (not going to mention any names) is doing on their EDM stages too.   have a look, then let me explain:]

I don't think he's that wrong there, maybe overgeneralizing, but it's true. Most of the 'magic' in EDM is in the studio. Though there's a few other heads who do some awesome things live (the Flashbulb, Tim Exile, etc).

He seems to miss the whole intention of djing. Surely he understands it as a way to broadcast new tunes and new sounds.

his main point in the article is that his show is pre-programmed and all he does is tweak fx/eq's live

he's also claiming that beatmatching isn't a skill

i dont really care what he has to say though tbf, i've never even heard one of his tunes, who gives a fuck

Ya this. But if you guys have ever watched any videos of deadmau5's live setup, I think he is doing more than a lot of people to.

To me this actually seems less "live" than a DJ set...

Of course, that's the case with most live sets.

Because Theo does Theo.

And XXMau5 really does come across as a clueless pretentious asshat.

How is he wrong? What is it that the aforementioned djs do that make it anything other than a mechanical task?

Yeah the DJ worship 'round here is pretty stupid too. I don't like the "task" of DJs to bring music to the people. Seems like an elite masturbatory club of heads who love that sense of 'authority'. Pretty much middlemen, just like promoters. Anyone can put-up a night and anyone can bring tunes to the crowds.

And of course, there are some incredible DJs out thurr who do some kickass shit. I've got nothing but respect for a guy like Mark N. And I can tell when a DJ is doing a good job, it does add another lay to the night. But those DJs are a minority, and he's right, most "bedroom DJs" are on the level of the world's top DJs playing on the mainstage worldwide. Most didn't get there for their DJ'ing but for their shitty-ass tunes.

It's the tunes and the people that mostly make a party a success. Mixing skills take a backseat to both and the ones with the mixing skills that do make a difference to the night are DJs who dedicate their lives to it.

Btw. I DJ myself.

its not 'dj worship' its defending the skill in what it takes to do a dj's job

if you play an all vinyl set its simply a harder task to do it as good as someone who has the computer do the work

end of the day a dj stands in front of a crowd and its as much a performance as it is simply selecting tunes, its part of club culture like it or not

the whole idea of devaluing the importance of 'the dj' is baffling to me on a site dedicated to music built to be played by dj's for people in a club

end of the day a producer builds tracks, promoters put on nights and book the dj's that play other peoples tunes or their own for people who come to the night for it all. no dj's + no promoters = no nights.

you need the full package for a good night, its not okay to just decide one part of the whole is of less value than the rest.

Anyone can be a promoter. Anyone can be a DJ. Not everyone can be a musician. It does take more practice to learn to DJ than Deadmau5 implies, he's way too hyperbolic. But like I said, the DJs that really do something truly remarkable are a rarity. Most DJs (including myself) just do their job. And some people will like the tunes they play or won't. But it's not some special magical skill only a few are blessed with. Even someone who isn't creative can do a proper DJ set.

I put on a night too. And I never kid myself into believing that what I did as a promoter was special. If it wasn't me, it would've been someone else (and I know this for sure because someone else was planning to put on a night after I started it and gave up when I started promoting mine). Whatever, I had fun and that's all that mattered to me. But the people didn't come for me, they came for the music.
