A how to make this sound (Nintendoooo)

Post by outbound » Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:55 pm

Sooo I managed to get back to goldeneye this weekend and remember I never figured out how to make this sound. Third hit in 2 seconds into the vid. It sounds like a pitched percussive instrument with a long reverb on, can anyone elaborate further.

It's a tambourine as I recall. It's one of Eric Serra's signature type sounds, you can hear it in most of his work http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0785385/

Okay been researching a lil more and found a bit more info

"a frying pan covered in cloth into a room closed the door, and set the microphone on the outside. and he hit it with a small wooden mallet."

Although this is from a comment on youtube so hardly concrete reference, will report back soon with more info :Q:

Scratch that, 95% sure it is a pitched down tambourine now.

This is what i've made based on sourced info and that vid. It was a pitched down tambourine from the proteus synth with it filtered down (this implies the pitch is actually an octave lower than it is) and then some reverb.

Playing about with this at higher pitches gives some much more similar sounds to the sound from other films he's done stuff for, fifth element etc. When it gets pitched this low the sound does break up a little bit but I guess that just adds to the charm :D

Let me know if you reckon this one is busted. :w:

That sounds about right. I have a Proteus laying around somewhere, as well as their DSP card version. Lots of famous sounds came from there actually. Including the X-Files theme whistle. When I first got it I remember thinking 'wow these guys are pretty lazy' haha.

I remembered it was a tambourine from a DVD interview I saw with Serra many years ago. If not 5th Element then maybe Goldeneye or Léon. Anyway that's close enough imo, maybe some more high end,
