I can definitely tell that its there but it has no "umph" to it in the low end. It may be fine by itself but with the bass that's coming out after the drop it might be getting lost. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing.
Thanks!

I was just changing the kick. :D
Can't find a perfect sample though so I'm starting to wonder if I should start layer some kicks and snares to get a better kick.

I'm reworking the whole mix right now also!

Thx for the critique!

Thanks, but what do you mean by its too straightforward?
Something like "simple". I mean that somehow the instruments play exacly as you expect them to play, as the chord progression expects them to play, but I miss the tweaks, the "unexpected". I hope I could explain it, but anyway, I'm not the big expert myself either ;-)

@Burgeamon: That knife party mix is fucking huge! Really waiting to hear it when it's finished
@4rantare: Keep working, that sounds nice. Maybe the kick should be a bit punchier, but only my opinion.
@bBLUU: Got to say, nice ideas you have collected, the track sounds nice :) I love punching kicks and snares, so i got to say this to you too, maybe a bit punchier or atleast louder kick would be better. But nice tune i think you should try to finish it :)

My wip...hmm... Been messing around trying to make some bassline/melody but i really suck at it. But i found these SUBBASS/GHOSTHACK sample packs and there was couple of bassline samples i eq'd and added sub so now it sounds even a little bit more like start of a track than a mess but still needs much work.
Some parts needs to be changed a bit to keep the flow but this is where i'm now so... :D
Also the part after round 1.23 is really in a testing, not much eq or anything. Any ideas should i delete it, or parts of it or should i change it somehow, anything is welcome :D

4rantare: I actually really like this, you say you don't know much about mixing but the mix sounds okay so far to me. I'm actually doing alot of practising trying to get better in mixing so I'd be happy to do a mixdown of the track for you if you wanted, just hit me up if you're interested. :)

Trapdoor: I agree with the others about the notes being a bit random sounding but I actually think it's kinda cool. The drop sounds nice to me, I love that hoover sound and everything seems to fit together quite well, maybe bring the drums up in the mix abit.

jrisreal: Big atmosphere on this, the rain sample adds a lot to the moody feel of the track. The piano sounds great too, I feel like a nice low passed reese sound would work nicely where that sub comes in, if you could get that to work somehow then this would make a really cool ambient track.

Okay, here's a little something I started before. This is really early in the composition, I'll be adding more variation to the pads & bass, more melody, atmospherics etc...but I'm really having trouble with the mix; especially the drums. I tend to mix as I go along so it's really slowing progress and I'd just like to hear some tips and see what some fresh sets of ears think of this so far. I appreciate any feedback and I will try to return any when I get chance, thanks.

I would definitely do this, I've found that you will rarely ever find a single kick sample that will have everything that you want.

Toryndrime -> Read the first page...

MaZa1 -> I like that fade in of the kick right before the drop, but the bassline after the drop sounds pretty quiet for me next to the drums you have in there. If it was a bit louder then I think it would carry better after the build-up that you have. Right now its kind of a let down, not because it's not "heavy" enough or whatever but just because it's quieter. On the other hand all of the sounds seem to be spot on and I especially like the synth from :41 - :47.

sub_lox -> Really liking the this track, great atmosphere in the beginning and that bassline that comes in it awesome! Only thing is I'm hearing a kind of ticking sound on the snare, although I have a feeling that it's just me... Only reason that I noticed was because I tried to make a DnB song as well and encountered the same thing because the break that I had to fill in the spaces was also hitting with the snare, just something to consider if you haven't already done so.

TorynDrime: This is an interesting idea, and I like the direction you are going with it. I would bump up the Kicks relative to the rest of the track because if this track sounded bit punch I think it would give the spooky/weird element to the song much more of a groove. Also, you might think of adding a pad or something to give a bit more of a melody to the track. You can still keep it spooky and what not but it would just add to the thickness of it, unless that is, you are going for something entirely minimal.

That sounds really nice! I don't know how that works though. Could you explain via PM perhaps? =)

sub_lox: Pretty dope track, loving the feel of where it gets into it at 2:13 and the buildup to that, overall a pretty dope track!

MaZa1: Loving the immediate buildup, I feel like it's a bit of an anticlimax though, could maybe bring up those synths a little bit, to feel like it gets more 'into it' than at the very beginning. Some pretty sick fx in there, pretty weird track, but digging it! Sounds good, might bring out the kick / snare a bit and make them a bit more punchy, otherwise it's sounding good.

bBLUU: Weird track man haha, digging it though, getting some Pendulum esque vibes, loving that high pitch, hydraulic sounding synth, I feel you could make this into a pretty dope track if used properly! Good job man

My WIP: Been working on this for a few hours today, it's not so much dubstep more of a clubby kind of electro house track, tell me what ya think!

@VirusTI
Snares a bit splashy for me, Maybe use a house Rimshot or maybe a few percussion instruments layered together with a splash of reverb! I like the build up the synths the pads everything works well otherwise.

@ Sub_lox, the drums in the beginning made me think you was going for something Calibre style (To be honest I was really digging the first minute or so but not when it went all dark and that) it went downhill for me at around 45 seconds, keep the drums simple and maybe add some piano keys at around 45 seconds and a nice strung out vocal. maybe a sax or two (sorry if I'm going on one here) Also I think you should make it drop at either around 1:10 or 1:30 the 2 minute mark is too long imo! good stuff!

@Maza1
Pretty darn good stuff, I do admit the straight up build up kind of leaves the main hook feeling weak, maybe something more subtle! although the drums work well all the synths sound good everything sounds good on my end. (One pick is that the structure of the mid bass gets a bit crazy try keep it to a set path but switch it up when needed)

Something I have been sitting on for a while only had the strings in the project but decided because I got up early to put a bit of time into it (not too sure what to add I have the problem of keeping to minimal because I get overwhelmed with too many channels) Maybe my workflow needs addressing. Anyways any feedback appreciated! Soundcloud

Love the intro - some nice samples along with the intrumentation. When the drums cut in they are nice and clean - good hats. I think you could push the sub a tad more but you've got a really clean mix. NOICE!

VirusTI
There's a few things with this track - firstly I think it needs more layers especially during the intro. Maybe some arps, some repetitive lead hooks amongst a few other things. The thing with this kind of music is that its almost always heavily driven by the drums and they are no where near punching through enough. Maybe use some bigger samples and some sidechaining (either with a super fast attack and release so there's little pumping or up the release to give the whole track some more momentum).

sub_lox
Instantly loved this. Think the drums could do with coming up and/or cutting through the mix a little more. Maybe its just the kick a little when it drops. Love the bass tho. Really rich, lots of depth and width. Nice work.

MaZa1
You bass levels are a bit off. They (overall) need to be much louder. Also after 16 bars the bass seems to go off somewhere else and it feels like it loses its flow. Some good sounds there tho - just need to come up as it drops far too quietly.

bBLUU
Thats a pretty interesting intro - love that. When the drums kick in I feel the bass gets a little muddy and could use some midrange crunch. Is just a little muddy in the low end. Maybe multiband compression a little to get those levels in check.

Right - same track again but I really wanna get it right. I've played it to a few people and the response has been great BUT what does come across sometimes is the bass is lacking (not the sub - if you boost that anymore it can over power the mix). How do I get that really full low end? The way the bass is layered at the moment is:

Sub >>> Bass Patch (High Shelf from around 400hz bring down the top >>> Second Bass Patch (Saw wav thats distorted reducing the lows at around 200hz to give the first patch space) >>> Same bass patch again raised an octave, distorted, give width with a low cut at around 500) >>> Lasers / Whoops / Other shizzzzz.

Any advice would be a god send!

@TorynDrime:
The intro sounds nice, yet a tad bit 'unsure' with those bongo hits. I'd like a little bit more consistency with them (read: add more of them or some delay/reverb to fill the space. I'd recommend the latter, as you've written Minimal Bass as genre. Also, EQ that speech sample to let these bongo hits with their verb through)
For the verse - it gets a tad repetitious with that quite constant 2-bar loop. Check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikjbuMFikL4 to see how a similar loops progresses (yes, completely different kinds of music, but why not get outside it? :) )
But you said that only a few hours were put it, so I think it'll certainly progress as you get familiar with it.

Here's something of mine of a few hours of work, C&C appreciated :) I had the idea of making it solely with subtractive synthesis (with a bit of FM), but couldn't resist putting in that snap. Kinda unclassifiable by genre, still unmixed, but give me your worst (ALL critique appreciated)

I'm a beginner. Am I on the right track?

Question: How do you mix in different sounds with your drop without everything becoming a drowned-out jumble?

Thanks for all the feedbacks, I was fed up with that track, I just wanted to throw it out, but after your comments I might give it another go someday :D

Burgeamon: Sorry but my ear doesnt distinguish the frequencies so precisely, so I wont be much of a help :? (just playing around with simple effects, distortions doesnt work?) All I can say is that it sounds pretty good to me :)

VirusTI: As said earlier, some more instruments, more variation could add more flow to the track. And, it might be just me, but I feel that the chord progression is followed too strictly, I mean that even though the melody itself changes, it feels a little monotone. But of course, for a few hours work it is quite nice.

Hi all, new member here.

@BloomingAudioLife: Progression of beats feels really organic; maybe a little more variation and earlier entry in the sub line would make it less repetitive though? The tri-tones in the lead are a bit fatiguing on the ears. I get what you're going for, but maybe use them more sparsely?

@Lightshapers: Great composition. Mix seems to fit together well in the intro; love how you blend in the dutch-ish synth leading into the vocal part. Main thing to my ear that's lacking vs. an A++++ is a really fat, wide bass in the drop. The synths at the drop are good and interesting, but the mid-bass just sounds a little hollow. Not sure how to fix this. Maybe tighten/snappify the snare a bit as well.

@Burgeamon: Tasty soundscape overall. Perhaps you can add a few more types of sound in the drop. This bass line seems to be begging for more complexity and choppiness. Not sure how the extended vocals fit with the composition; they seem a bit out of place to my ear. Ending could drift out rather than a harsh cut.

Posting up a bootleg remix I'm currently working on for comments. Fair warning: it's electro house, not dubstep. Haven't made the breakdown or outro yet.
