I don't see a purpose in owning one. Seems like only purpose is to kill.
Depends if you mean illegally or not. Black powder based revolvers are still legal as are most low calibre rifles. As long as you have a license and the weapon is semi automatic. Guns are great fun but dangerous in the hands of people that dont respect them.

Guns scare the fuck out of me!

Saw two coppers earlier with machine guns in their hands and pistols on their hips. Why the need for so much force?

Sport hunting is different to hunting, and illegal in a lot of places.
I meant killing and eating your own food instead letting someone else do it is all. I get your point though, I've hunted before but don't care to do it again. I just think if more people killed and cleaned their own food at least once they'd appreciate the sacrifice more. Just my thoughts on it as it definitely changed how I view eating meat.

I'd go hunting if the animal was going to be eaten, i don't like the idea of killing animals just for fun.

Yeah killing for fun and just leaving it there is referred to as sport hunting. Really against that for lots of reasons...
Personally I don't even like the idea of catch and release fishing. It's good in some ways, like with rare species I guess... dunno.

i hate guns
if it were up to me the hunters would have to use spears and bows, and wars would still be fought by psychopaths swinging blades into one another
it's an awful invention

I see your point, but spears/bows cause unnecessary pain as they usually bleed to death. Seen people use bows, it's not a pretty sight :|
At least a bullet is quick, most of the time instant.
But yeah I agree we'd be better off without them though, but probably not by much.

I can't deny there's something satisfying about firing guns, maybe its just the childish part of your brain pretending its in call of duty or something

that's a bit of insight i hadn't considered.
I had just thought of it as harder work for hunters, a bit more of a fair sport between them and the game they're hunting... and a safer world for people

But if the deer prefer bullets to arrows, so be it
Of course nothing's ever stopped me from eating livestock from a slaughter house

i just hate the enthusiasm over technological triumphs and historical relics whose only use is to hurtle missiles into people and kill them
You never know who's the next stupid, scared, paranoid, aggressive, or violent individual
maybe a stray bullet hits you... maybe you're just a pharmacist and this junkie isn't thinking straight because of how bad he needs the oxycontin
maybe you should have a gun too, to be safe. But maybe the junkie never wanted to shoot, but sees you draw your weapon and freaks out, empties his rounds and leaves you all dying in a pool of blood... meanwhile had you not drawn for your weapon, he would have never shot his. or maybe you kill him and save the day. Maybe you miss and kill a bystander and junkieman freaks out and opens fire

There's too much uncertainty, you never know when someone can decide to fire a missile through your body, on purpose or not.
maybe it'd be better if everyone was armed, because no one would fuck around with their gun or feel empowered by it.

Always fancied hunting another human being. Not with a real game, maybe with a paintball rifle or something. Alternatively, someone was telling me there is this company that offers people assassination targets (all non lethal)...you're given a name and a photo/bio of the target, and then have to squirt them with a water pistol or something.

EDIT - found it;

Hunting is still a valid means of population control. Letting a population of a certain species grow uncontrollably does more harm than good.

This... PA's forestry industry may completely collapse in the coming years because the forest are full of old growth, nothing can grow because of the constant browsing by deer. Hunting is the easiest and most efficient solution

However did the natural world survive all those hundreds of millions of years without us? :o :)

Another vote for hunting for food here... apart from fishing, I've only ever caught and killed my dinner once - a rabbit - it was one of the more satisfying and delicious experiences of my life.

One of my friends from school's Dad was a livestock farmer... we mucked in "taking care" of his turkeys one year, but I didn't get to eat any of them. :|
