Captain, you need to give atleast 3 feedbacks first.
But the track sounds actually nice, but you need to eq and get those levels right.

@captain i like the vocals in the drop
the bassline is superior to everything else. take it down some db it wouldnt sound less hard but it will get some room for the drums
arrengment works for this genre i guess
try some sidechaining

@Chow Mayne
i like the build up to the drop
some more low end would be nice the actual synth is fat though get maybe a balance between sub synth and drums i wouldnt go for much more than that in the main parts maybe make a bridge with
a mellow version of your main synth where you can bring in some pads or ambience

@burgeamon
i can understand that the high pitch noise has its place but i would feel this much more without it keep it real not everything that came up last couple of years is worth it
definitly good beside the high pitch, vocals groove really nice, maybe bring in a half time section with vocals sub and drums or half time wobble of the synth?! besides the high pitch noise :W:

@inthecrowed
favorited your tune without knowing that you are posting here so finish this one! def feel it

ok this one i want to make really really basic so just really sublime changes etc no playing around and not more than two elements at a time like drums bassline so if somebody has any ideas to bring in some changes here and there would be really nice

A beginner needs some help.

Post by Udyret » Wed Jun 27, 2012 10:43 pm

Hi there, im not quite sure if i am in the right forum but ill give it a shot.
Today i though "Hey! lets try to make dubstep!" so i spent the evening looking at some tutorials etc, and came up with with a couple of bars of (not sure if i can call it music)
I would love it if someone could give me some feedback on what to do and not to do. there is no eq or effects on the track yet, just some volum adjustments. And the intro is just something i threw on before uploading.
My major questions is.
The Intro: i know it should be abit longer, but what could i do to spice that up, should i use something of the (main) part?
The main part: will it get to repeative? is it too much? and what should i change (melody wise)

A big thanks to the one who answers/slaughters me!

You honestly made that after deciding that you want to and try and make dubstep this morning? :a: Or do you have experience in another genre?

Budspencerton: Beginning was really weird haha, had a very disjointed vibe, I would try and add something to fill it out and add to the continuity, otherwise it had a pretty good vibe. Loving the breakdown and slowdown at the end, nice work!

Captain: I think this song has really good ideas, but the production could be improved. The snare / kick could be much punchier and louder, with the basses sidechained to them, the drop was good, except it all needs EQ'ing and resampling etc like fuarkk, otherwise it sounded really good. Overall the track's good, just needs to all be EQ'd, compressed, FX etc

Klesherdubs: Pretty weird haha, not really my style of dub but I'll comment anyway, the bass could've been much louder and punchier, as well as your drums, especially your kick and snare! I think the track needs a lot of work in terms of levels, compression and EQ's and needs perhaps a slightly different melody?

Here's my WIP, it's the same song as before but mixed a lot better, with a few other things added / changed etc, comments about your opinions and what you do / don't like as well as comments on the mix, would be greatly appreciated

captain : at this stage I would say dont spend too long on one tune and keep watching tutorials, you have some good ideas, but unfortunately your sound design isn't up to par to produce them. You should look into picking up a sample pack to get better drum samples.

budspencerten: they tune sounds a bit flat and honestly im not a huge fan of dnb, but i see what you wanted to do with the track and it has potentional you just need it to sound more crisp.

VirusTI: the tune itself is okay, the part i liked the most was the breakdown and the main wobble was actually pretty cool, but very repetitive. keep at if you develop your style i see you putting out some great tunes

This is my first ever moombathon track, looking to get some feedback before I do some at-home mastering or possibly just dumping it and moving on ( if its bad enough lol)

Aimsniff Really like the drum sounds you use and all of the incidental hits. The mix sounds pretty solid. I'd say the synth that comes in at the drop is a little too loud though, had to turn down my volume a couple notches when that came in haha...I like it though! I'd bring up the little vocal samples too, cuz they're cool sounding, but a little quiet. One other thing I'd suggest is tuning the synth up an octave during maybe the second half of the second drop, since it's pretty much the same tonal range the whole time...just an idea for some variation. Overall, a really cool groove though. I'd definitely finish mixing/mastering it!

VirusTI The snare sounds a little flat...I think you might need to give it a little more crispness in the higher frequencies. I don't know what it is, but at the drop, stuff gets a little muddy. I think you should go in and cut some notches into your wobble or that lead synth. Really like the change in drum pattern at 1:50. I might try taking the claps out at 2:17 just for a few measures maybe. I think it might help increase the effectiveness of that transition. There's a lot of cool ideas / sounds in this WIP though, and I definitely think you should keep workin' on it! It's definitely got style man, and I agree with Aimsniff, the wobble is pretty interesting!

BudSpencerTron That bass is wickid man...I really like this track actually. It's super interesting. You have a lot of different experiments going on from other tracks I've heard from you lol. I think this style could work, but I think you need to address some mixdown issues first. Like if you're going to only have 1-2 elements playing at a time, you gotta be spot on with the mixdown. I think the midrange bass sound might just be a little too loud, and maybe needs some EQ work. The drums overall sound pretty good. The weird shaker things that start to come in at 2:22 are super interesting. I like them a lot. A really cool style and tune so far though dude.

i like you style, nothing really bad accept I would shorten the main part by a lot and maybe different melodic parts inbetween because its gets kinda repetitive, the song in your sig is really on point tough

I dont have any experience in "electro" genre. And im not that good at synths, so im just using massive presets with a few tweeks. My music experience comes from metal, rock. But ive love listening to dubstep, even tho im at the point where i found out there is alot more than just Skrillex, nero, and flux pavillion: p

@captain, Id really try to focus on your percussion samples an overall mixdowns. Seems like you like hypey fun shit kinda like me though :]

@almostskate : very selective synths that I think work together. You have a neat almost minmalist style an i wanna hear that when its finished. Build up reminded me of an all distance tune.

@VirusTi : snare needs a bit more transient shapeing to it with less compression.... it might get it popping a bit more. I think the synths are nice but i would like the overall track to be a bit more coherent an flow better. Neat drum work all in all, will be please to hear when this is done aswell.

@elnn: I really like the ambiance of your track, it's very dark; but the synth at 3.30 sounds a bit out of tune and I hoped for a new synth/bass at 4.06 (you just added percussions, it could be improved I think)

@VirusTI: I like it, it sounds a bit like distorted house or electro music. But personally I would increase the tempo just a little.

@Hero: I love the intro and the vocals, a bit less the breakdown (personally I would prefer more fat & aggressive wobble). A great track anyway

Ok, first thank you for all your feedbacks (I just post my track and didn't know that we had to post something before).
So, I've changed the synth at the beginning and added a "melody" (just a few notes) at the end. I try to follow everything you said, and so I began to take mastering courses on youtube (and I also visited a really great website from a member of here (don't remember his name)).
If you see an evolution, please tell me it ^^ I'll come back with another version this week-end, after intensive days of sound design courses :)

Edit: I was thinking about a rap instead of the two first "daddy da-daddy/I want/I-I" at 0.13. No?
I try to produce all kind of sounds and I recently come to dubstep/brostep.

captain: Nice percussion, works well with the song. The intro could possibly do with a pad of some sort in the back ground. I think the breakdown/buildup could do with more downlifters and uplifters but that might just be personal opinion. Maybe a few more cymbals (crashes and rides) in the drop. I think the bass sounds need more cleaning up, they sound a little too distorted. Good effort so far, keep up work on this.

Hero: Those drums are great. I think the vocals need to blend in with the rest of the song a bit more but they sound really cool. I think the drop would benifit from some decreasing frequency white noise or maybe some cymbals. The bass sounds could also do with being a bit more fattened or beefed up. That lowpass in the intro is really nice. I think a lot of the song needs more synths and sounds going on, it sounds a bit empty at times. Really good project so far. Sounds really good.

aimsniff: The drums sound decent enough except with that lead I would've kept to the original Moombah drum pattern and had a harder hitting snare. I think the drums might need a better mixdown but I'm pretty much a beginner so I wouldn't know. I'd probably add a little more variety in the drop but I understand why you kept it repetitive. Sounds good, I love Moombahton so keep working on this.

I don't even know why I'm posting something so short but I'd like other people's opinions before committing to this as an actual track. I understand if you think it sounds like too much of an Alvin Risk ripoff. I need ideas so don't critisize the mixdown too much.

@living_tragedy i can only say the same as i said to burgeamon this high pitch noise is like the yoi bass maybe replay it somehow
i would feel another percussion on top of the snare maybe a higher clap

@hero like the vocals and the strings
dont feel the bassline atm maybe just keep the sub and go for another basssound or just the sub
maybe put the strings one octave down and add some noise ,frizzle or vinyl cracks

@aimsniff just miss a sub here and there

@viruz ti hm its far away rom what i listen to but i try to be objective hm maybe bring the bassline in the front drop the synth by a few db or sidechain it more
maybe a harder hitting bassdrum underneath and a harder 909 snare too

@almostskate100
the sub hits ok but maybe try to go for a really dry f just mono no effects and the volume change little bit less hard
try to bring in another clap rim or even a household sound herea nd there with lots of reverb dubdelay etc to move away into space would add so much
the sub at 3 14 hits harder so if you changed something there do it earlier too
the basssynth is refreshing and works lowpassed pretty well maybe open it occasionally into the higher freq if possible what i found pretty awsome is connecting reverb time with high pass
or high filterband or reverb wet plus time minus dry something to give it movement

Feedback for others:
@Living_Tragedy Nice shit man, definitely work it into a full track. Not much to say other than the sound design seems good, finish it up!

@captain Nice drums, I like the realism. Vocal chops sound quite cool, although a little creepy :P Mix sounds good, maybe the vox are a little low. Main synth(s) after the drop maybe slightly too distorted although they remind me a lot of early Skrilelx stuff and kind of fit even though they're crushed to fuck. The overall energy and variation is really good. Maybe work on panning your synths around a little - like in short bursts? I really like the track man, good job. Out of interest - where are the drum samples from? ;-)

@Hero Really like the intro, nice and clean. The vocals are a nice touch - too much chorus(/flanger?) imo though - perhaps use a stereo widener on them instead? Bass design is tight - fits with the drums well. Nice start - finish it up man.

@almostskate100 Cool dark intro, for me the drums sound a little thin, specifically the kick. Bass is nice and works well with the perc, deep stuff like this isn't my speciality so I don't really have any tips or ideas on improving the track. Good job though.

@VirusTI First thing I noticed is the reversed perc you're using to lead into the snare - it's out of place, use it every other hit and lower the volume maybe? Synth work sounds nice, but the drums are a little boring - get some hats and rides sitting around the kick/snare pattern. I'd also advise using another kick sample. @1.34 the synth sounds like it's clipping or just way distorted - I'd check that out. Good ideas man, the track just needs polishing up.

@Udyret A little too much distortion on the bass for me, the whole track is way loud imo also and stuff gets a little crazy. Try cleaning up your sounds.

@BudSpencertron Wow, interesting track. The main bass is killer (what synth was the base for that?), everything sounds a little crazy although I'm guessing thats the idea. Reminds me of some early Noisia. I like the ideas in the track, I think it just needs some more work to get everything tight - although it's sounding pretty good already. As for subtle thigns to add - perhaps consider playing with some tribal drums or bongos in the breakdown and also throw some crisp rides around in the main sections.

A new track from me, some prog house, any thoughts?

Track was mixed on headphones, and very roughly mastered, some things probably sound shitty on other peoples systems.
Any comments, feedback and plays/comments on SoundCloud is really appreciated :)
