I recently made a remix of gotye - somebody I used to know, and uploaded the song to soundcloud and youtube. After receiving a few thousand plays, the song just disappeared. We were featured in blogs, and the song was not available for download anywhere.
There are hundreds of remixes of this song on souncloud....
Anyone else have this problem? Is there anything I can do?

Contact SC Support, i've found their twitter support account to be particularly helpful in solving matters quickly. If your remix had sufficient popularity it may have warranted a removal due to copyright infringement unlike a lot of the other remixes of that track that go unnoticed.

If a label reports for copyright and creates enough of a stink about it, SC will remove the track as standard. Most artists/labels see 'bootlegs' as positive promotion, but some prefer to protect their interest, especially if the the artists/label themselves aren't fans of the remix.

I'm just so disappointed by the volume of remixes with more views than ours that dont get persecuted, especially without warning.
im gonna have to stop using soundcloud.

Or stop doing unauthorised remixes and uploading them without permission?

It in their 'Terms Of Use' which at some point when setting up your account you will have clicked "Accept" on...

No but they picked yours because Gotye doesn't like your face.

Or your music. Could be a million reasons...you said you had a lot of blog views for it? Maybe someone who knew Gotye heard your song and sent them a text saying "just heard this remix of you, LOL" and they got pissy about it. Who knows?

Have you contacted SC support, as I suggested, for an official reason?

They will also remove DJ mixes due to infringement. They have a list of labels and publishers who do not want their music made available on Soundcloud in any form. Sometimes things only get removed if you have downloads enabled, but sometimes it does not matter (especially since someone can download it regardless).
No doubt they have already implemented or are planning to implement scanning software that scans uploaded material and automatically flags certain music for review/deletion like Youtube does.

I've had sc not allow me to upload a song because it detected a guitar part I sampled. Who cares...just make and upload more music. Its not like a gotye remix is what was going to catapult you to stardom. Contacting them won't really do much either
"yeah I broke the terms of service I agreed on, why did you take my song down?"

Hmm, Im sure Gotye did a remix comp for "Somebody that i used to know" So he (Or the label) made the stems freely available, I find it weird they would kick up a fuss if someone decided to then display their work. Then again, Im not well versed in how labels deal with stuff like that

A lot of remix comps have stipulations on releasing your remixes outside of the contest.

Yes the label released the stems and encouraged people to make and create their own mixes and give them away, play them on mix shows etc..it is a proven strategy one that Missy Elliot championed to cross over into dance going back before the EDM U.S. explosion, so fast forward, Gotye goes to Number 1 all around the world, their label Universal Music Group steps in and has soundcloud remove all remixes so they can squeeze every last penny out of iTunes sales, msg from soundcloud "By legal regulation we are obliged to act on content being reported as infringing others' copyright. We received the takedown request from Universal Music."
So they use everyone to make mixes and help promote the music in multiple formats and when the group makes it they come in and take down all the mixes that helped propel the song/band to the heights they achieved. Same thing happened with Martin Solveig "Hello", loads of soundcloud mixes, songs blows up worldwide, label comes in and removes all the mixes that help propel the song.

Missy Elliot giving away the Get Ur Freak On acapella was the smartest move she (or moreover, her label) ever did.
