when ever i hear any talk about FM the 1st thing thing i see is "metalic metalic metalic"
They can do much more then that. ill show you a very good sweet sound that i love :D

il give that a read mate, i dont use reason but im sure i can just transfer the principles to fm8]

Yeh you don't have to use reason, its just the theory for FM, there was 2 parts to it if you missed the second one.

In subtractive synthesis you are limited to few simple waveforms like saw square sin etc. but with fm synthesis you can create a lot of new sounds with modulating few oscillators, that's the best part of fm synthesis. Atm I'm using massive for most of my stuff because it has a lot of waveforms.
Btw. Image-line Harmor is nice too :p

if you have basic understanding of subtractive synthesis, oscilators, filters, envelopes and lfo`s, you dont have to respect fm so much. You can use fm8 and sytrus like regular synths and when you need something extra then you modulate oscilators. Use mostly numbers that make sense (1:2,3:4...) and use your ears.
