How to make a Jantsen/Hooky/Kidnap&Ransom bass synth?

Post by Trollah » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:42 pm

Okay so for ages now i've been trying to create a Jantsen style bass/synth but i can't seem to achieve anything close to it!

Examples:

Soundcloud
(The synth/bass in the drop around 1.08)

Soundcloud
(The synth/bass in the drop around 1.10 -> the first example is closer to what im looking to make)

My attempts so far have all been on Massive, usually consisting of a couple of oscillators, and some vibrato or pitch modulation and a slightly lengthened attack.

If anyone knows how to achieve this sound i'd love to hear how its done!

Thanks :)

Sounds similar to Flux Pavillions synths (thinking of Bass Cannon and You Got 2 Know), take a look at some tutorials on YouTube for those synths and work from there?

oo oo oo i think i know this one, open massive. set osc1's wavetable to sine, turn on osc2 and do the same. osc1 pitch = +24.00 (up 2 octaves). osc2 pitch = -24.00 (down 2 octaves). select Parabolic shaper in insert 1 and turn up the dry/wet to 100 percent and do the same w/ the drive. after that set both oscillators routin knobs runnin straight to filter 1, as in just sliding the fader which is to the right of each respective osc. up to "F1". then select "Scream" as the filter and turn down the resonance to about a quarter/25percent and do the same w/ the "Scream" knob, then put an lfo/performer on the filters cutoff and voila. that's regarding the first clip you had posted^^ (if you want the sound to sound more "wide" then just put a dimension expand. on it and you should be good)

second clip is a little more tricky of a sound to nail. do everything said above^^^ but instead of an lfo on the cutoff select the performer and have it affect the pitch of both osc. by -12 semitones, and within the performer select the thinner saw looking waveform all the way on the right of the first set of waveforms it provides and just set that on every other block in the sequencer of the performer so like one on 1, 3, 5, etc until you get to 15 then choose whatever speed you want the sound to be "wobblin" at and voila again. it may not sound exact exact exact so you just have to do a litttle tweaking and there you have it

I dont get it, I've pretty much did everything stated above but it sounds horrible. I even tweaked everything, and put CamelPhat filters over it and it still sounds bad..

I can't seem to get the same effect as this tune for example:

Can someone please please please pleaseeee help me finalise this patch?? Any pointers? Is it just this sound + plugins (i.e bitcrusher etc?) thanks guys :)

Heres what i would try...

Put 1ENV on the cutoff of the scream filter and drag it down all the way to the left (the 1ENV, not the cutoff if that makes sense)

Then ive got it as:
-Decay Fully down
-Attack Fully Down
-Attack Level Fully Up
-Decay Half
-Decay Level Fully Down
-Release 1/4

Muck around with it and find the sound you want, might nto be the same but it sounds sick. Im actually using this sound in a song of mine which will be released on TheDuplocDealers free 30 tune compilation out 30th september. Lool sorry, thought i'd sneak that in there, plus you might like it if you like this sound :)

thanks man!! it´s not that sound but that sounds well nice!...Ive got all my studio stuff in scotland (moved back home to sweden) so i cant produce anything atm as my dads laptop isnt powerful enough, so ive been messing around making a million massive & fm8 presets for when i get my stuff back...this is my favourite style of dubstep and im gonna be making alot of tunes like this when i get my stuff back hehe...I actually managed to make this sound in fm8 ages ago but my pc is still a scotland so i dont have acess to any of my old presets...you should give us a shout when the tune has been released (would be nice to hear it)...big ups
