That part of your comment just made me realise how old i am,i remember jungle mania around 95/96.

I know the feeling. I remember when Jump Up wasn't a bad word, then when the term Clownstep came around, it was all over for Jump Up from the DnB elitists. I never played the Clownstep myself but I did used to bash out some of the Jump Up tunes. I was always some sort of DnB outsider who played the more breakier/junglist side of DnB, which was pretty much the predecessor to Drum Funk, as compared to all of the 2-Steppers/Techsteppers on the scene.

The Clownstep term came about after the wobbles came in, which is the same thing that happened to Dubstep.

Also yes "clownstep" was definitely hated by purists, I think that's how DOA got its reputation as hate machine
Nah there was anti-everything threads long before clownstep became the term of the month/year.

The term was originally used to describe swingy tunes like bodyrock, spacehopper etc - and not in a negative context - and it wasnt used that much... and then twist em out came out and the term slowly switched to that "new jump up" kind of stuff and then got picked up big time.
