Fuck I'm frustrated w/ my dubstep

Post by JTreeZY » Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:07 am

I've been producing since January (it was my new years resolution) and i've learned how to navigate Reason better over the last few months but my synthesis still sucks, shit doesnt even sound like dubstep, I've been using malstrom cuz funtcase and some other pros seem to like it but I've been having no luck. I think i mite be a little better with subtracktor and thor but if funtcase is using malstrom thn it must be the best synth in reason. But theirs only so many knobs to turn and i'm turnin all of them and I'm not gettin anything that sound "big." When I do acheive ok sounds they either lack mid ranginess or the distortion just makes them ugly to listen to.

I started this track today, and I was hoping I cud take my synthesis to the next level but it still sounds like basic shit I'm not askin to be pro over night and i dont care about makin brostep but c'mon (sorry to sound like a fuckin baby)

Just some generic but very true advice, make your sound in a synth (basic) then add effects but do so subtley. If you drown your basses in effects it'll always end up sounding like an electric guitar. Carful eqing to keep the sound clean multiple times in your chain. Basically, start basic, and build little by little.

When I was starting out with reason malstrom was too much more me... Thor is very simple and very powerful I found learning there easier.. Try that... Sound design is a grind man.. It's gonna take a lot of practice, but one piece of advice that I can give you is learn what the effects you are using do, honestly once I figured that our everything started to click

use Thor, look for tutorials on it, is different to malstrom, different, probably more powerful, malstrom is a little more unusual. Thor was the synth they added to really compete with the big beefy vst synths other people were using for bass in full daws. Give it a week, watch the youtubes, look for Thor threads on here etc.

there's no magic formula, it won't happen in six months. keep making tunes, keep reading books, forums, watching tutorial vids and listening to music that you like. eventually it will come to you.

Stop using reason, its crap (Any one who says that reason synths are just as good as some of the VSTs you can get is a NOOB). Yes some people make good tunes with it but why run a race with a broken leg, if you get me.
Spend more time watching videos on how to make fat basses.
Realise that its takes years to get good.

First of all....don't listen to this guy. Reason is perfectly fine. Many producers use it and make amazing music with it.

The next thing you need to do is keep working. You haven't even grazed the surface of the things you need to know after only 6 months. Funtcase has put in years doing this to get where he is now.

Troll? are you stupid?

You must use reason. Im not trolling, im trying to give good advice. The best thing I ever did was stop useing reason.

Anyone want to say that reason synths are as good as say (let me pick one at random) Rob Papen Blue?

Yes alot of people make good music with reason but my point is reason is not as good as other DAWs. Why bring a sword to a gunfight?

You dont have to listen to me and im sure alot of Reason users will say "Reasons a good DAW and you can make good music with it" and they are right but other DAWs are better.
I dont know maybe your not like me...,. see with me I want to make the best music I can and to do that I need to use the best tools available to me, dosnt that sound logical?

Put the push bike away and buy a car if you want to win the race.

Ok if im a am what you say I am a trolll then why is it that none can say that reason is just as good as Logic, Cubase and ableton? You cant say it is because its not.

lol I care more about being called a troll that my point.

Now you just being ridiculous.

Can you back that up?

I can back what im saying up.

If you can use VSTs then your not limited to a set number of tools.
The Synths in Reason dont even come close to some of the VSTs you can get.
Reason has this sound to it that dont like(all tho I do like reason reverb)
Reason is small and dose not fill the screen.
All the strings and piano sounds are cheep and cheesey.

I've been producing for a few years now, and sometimes I still get frustrated at my dubstep. Instead of giving up however, just take a little break away from your DAW, and go out and enjoy life. When you aren't producing and doing synthesis, take time to read about new production techniques, and watch tutorials and anything music related you can get your hands on. It takes quite a while to be as good as (insert random producer here), who most likely has been in the edm scene for ages and has been doing electronic music for years. Its all about maximizing your workflow IMO. Keep at it, and the techniques will become more fluent. Production will always continue to evolve and get better for you, as long as you stick with it and just try to have fun and enjoy what you make. Too many people worry about sounding as good as the big artist on top of the charts, rather than making something unique that makes it your own.

Try to just have fun, when you aren't having fun making a sound, or you aren't enjoying the way your music sounds, then take a little break for a while. Some days, I will make things that sound terrible to me, then i'll take a break for a day or two, and sit behind the computer for hours and hours punching in ideas and tweaking everything until it pleases me.

A lot of people don't realize that these larger than life basslines and amazing sounds are sometimes put together over a long period of time, rather than just made in one sitting. I get the feeling a lot that some "big name" producers may even spend over a month making a song sound so huge. Take NOISIA, for example. I read in an interview somewhere that they sometimes spend entire days just working on their sub bass, or other single elements of their tracks. It definitely shows as well.

Honestly it doesnt matter what DAW you are using. If you like the one youre on stick with it and learn it in and out. Reason is a perfectly good DAW. Ive tinkered with it a bit. It's not my preference, but I seriously doubt that Propeller would have invested in as many versions as they have and stayed ranked as one of the top used DAW's for as many years as they have if it was shitty and inferior to other DAW's. You get out of it what you put in. Now as for your dubstep... It's got a good backbone to it. You just have to funk it up a bit. It needs to move more. If you listen to any tune you'll hear how it there are pauses and multiple sounds and FX going in and out. You just need to make it less linear and give it some swing. Put the step in your dubstep. Does that make sense? lol. Your melodies are good, they just need fattening up. Utilize multiple oscillators and compressors. Youtube is amazing too for finding tutorials. Just search the synth name with dubstep bass, dubstep screams, etc. A lot of people post good tutorials. A trick I use too is to recreate a tunes that I really like to get an idea of the structure the artist uses.
