Dear Wub

Post by outdropt » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:04 pm

Ive been lurking here for about a year, maybe a little longer.

Ive noticed recently there has a been a trending topics of complete shit. Where some guy that has only posted twice, is asking for some bullshit nobody wants to help them with. Just completely pointless garbage, that nobody comments on, or has a serious answer for.

I feel like there is a need for sorting threw the trash and leaving the well though out sincere posts up.

I was thinking maybe like a questionnaire before you sign up asking some basic/mid level production questions before you can even join DSF (questions that couldnt be answered by a google search). Or creating a Board for high level production topics, and regulating strictly who posts there.

I mean I know that would be a lot of work to put together, but im sure it would be much appreciated by a lot of the seniors that still login and post.

If this doesnt work out, i think all seniors in DSF should burn the shit out of some of these restarted questions, just because of the over-saturation.

Its soo broad tho, IMO

Like the range of posts go from really complex, what is this technique
Or retarded noobs asking should i compress my master bus, ect ect ect.

It would be awesome for a section made for high level production questions/discussions.

Otherwise im going to have to go on a hunt, threw all the garbage posts, and start tearing new assholes left and right.

(had to do a double take to be sure OP wasn't talking to themselves)

this idea's been raised before. I think it's a bad idea, I think most people agree.
Those lower level questions you pointed out are important for those OP's , it may be basic for you but reading those threads is how many of us have learned basic conventional shit that we otherwise would've never figured out

Anyway putting obstacles in place or segregating the board is only going to cause less good content. It's a mixed bag here and that's a good thing, just ignore what doesn't apply to you.

Considering this isn't a bad question at all, i'm interested in what your answer would be?
Really interested why you'd think that's "retarded noob" fare.

I know i am fairly new compared to a lot of the seniors here.

But if you look threw what i have posted, they have all been legitimate questions on production.

I sat on here for a good 5 months before i even thought about creating an account and making a topic. I soaked up a lot of the material that has been talked about previously and when i started to form questions of my own, only then i started to post.

Its just annoying and alot of decent questions go unanswered because of the flood of "this gear or this gear" "Do you need monitors to produce" "how do you make this sound"

Maybe not a bad question, but you could easily find the answer with a quick search. You should know what compression is, what it does before you attempt to apply it to anything.

You should have some knowledge on the subject before you ask a question. And i think that is what alot of these post recently are lacking. There is so much knowledge on here already, why remake the wheel, ya know?

It seems like a lot of the new people here are lacking basic production knowledge.

mate everybody started out like that once, if nobodys willing to help them, how is anyone ever gonna get that knowledge. i admit theres a lot of retarded questions flying about but for the most part these are dealt with pretty quickly by mods, it isnt a crime for someone to not know a thing about producing and sign up here to learn is it

That's actually not something you can just google. It's dependent on what you want to do with your master, there are a lot of different compressors and ways of mixing for your own master vs. for a ME, for instance, and the proper settings for bus compression vary. That's a question that makes for good discussion almost every time it's asked.

And you think you have important new "legitimate production" questions, as you put it, but the fact is they're more than likely just reposts to most of us too.

This thread's starting to piss me off.

Now what is something you've asked and got no help with?
If you don't find this place helpful, honestly just fucking leave, there are plenty of other production forums.

Thanks for the grammar lesson,

I wasnt asking the question, i was using it as an example (maybe not the best one)

Most of the time i have received help in some way when i post, and i cant lie i love this place. It is the reason i know what i do now. Im on it 8 hours a day (which is while im at work), this keeps me very entertained.

I think splitting basic and high level questions would be beneficial. But with all the negative feedback im assuming it will not be considered.

really bad idea

and I agree w/ Today, your sample "noob" question was a legitimate one, that would be a great topic of discussion

besides this board already doesnt get a whole lot of traffic.

And I like all the different "how do I make this sound thread"'s i dont know why people get all butthurt about people wanting to make various artists sounds... arent we all just trying to make cool noises?

its like logging on to a guitar forum and someone asking for help with playing "Enter Sandman" or something and people blasting them saying "You noob! Write your own songs why do you wanna sound like someone else" its completely bass ackwards if you ask me

see i've always semi been behind this idea, (it worked great on the lifted production board where you needed to be approved to be on it via having some releases, or submitting a tune and proving you could at least produce well) because honestly the sheer amount of shit questions and blind leading the blind answers HAS scared off or annoyed a good chunk of the actual knowledgeable people and regulars away over the years
i've personally had periods where i just avoid this place like the plague or roll my eyes when i see some of the topics that get regurgitated over and over, and trying to bring up something worthwhile or more advanced gets buried under all the shit questions

i think almost every thread is legit, "how to make this sound" threads are tough because most of us aren't too eager to sit down and crack a synth patch or something for somebody else when we're not going to use it. But if one out of ten get replies, and they involve discussion on synthesis , then that's a valuable thread. I'll lurk in some of those just to snag new tips on synthing basses or leads. "Frequency splitting" is honestly just a buzzword i think, and people are getting the wrong idea but if there's one thread where someone taught us how to do it right on the right sounds, then that's a valuable thread.

I'm not going to pretend that every thread or post here is terrific and helpful to everyone. They aren't. But you just ignore it if it doesn't apply to you. Read through what does apply, and keep an open mind about the techniques others use. But also remember to keep an open mind toward your own ideas about what's right or good, regardless of the number of forum members who agree or disagree. we all have different ears.

if someone's asking for you to hand them a patch or sample pack, just ignore them or let them know that they've got some work cut out for themselves, maybe nudge them in the right direction and move on.

You need to understand that most of the people that are helping a lot of the newer producers were at one point at that same level. Some of them may have even posted several non-legitimate questions before eventually attaining the knowledge required to post interesting ones. I don't think there's anything wrong with those threads. It's just a matter of not reading them or simply telling the person that what they are asking is not going to get answered for whatever reason.

By forcing people to have a specific level of knowledge before joining this forum would literally kill it. If they are ostracized in such a way when they first get here they will find somewhere else. Eventually the older members will fade as they always do and there will be no newer members to take their place. DSF has helped me so much, and so many others as well. It would be a shame to see it die like that.

I think the idea for a more advanced sub-forum was presented a while back, but it was considered a bad idea. I mean, if the talented producers have their own place, who is going to help teh nubs?
I really doubt the pro's would want to go to the "nub-forum" to answer nub-questions all the time. (Not saying no one would, but it def wouldn't be many.)
If anyone really wants a forum to discuss advanced stuff with knowledgeable people, make one? :)
