Google Nexus 7

Really considering getting one of these, £200 for 16GB is such a bargain and they look super responsive and snappy performance wise. Already got an iPad 1 but it is pretty slow and crashes quite a lot.

Anyone else ordered one already or thinking about it?

Iphone will always be the best because they own the supply market in Asia. They get the best quality products for the lowest prices and no other competitor can do anything about it. I'm sure it would be illegal if it was in Europe.

Apparently it cost £200 to make the iPad and they are selling for £400.

The Nexus 7 is actually selling for less than it costs to make but due to the fact that the user will be using Google's search engine and other features they are still making money.

I'm interested but only if I can install my OS of choice. Otherwise imo tablets are like big phones that don't make calls? I have an older tablet with Linux and XP on it and I find it much more useful than my friend's new tablet (though we do different things on them I guess). I'm interested in the new hardware involved and the slimmer size.

Here's info on rooting it: http://liliputing.com/2012/07/how-to-ro ... overy.html

And there's a few distros working towards getting linux to run natively on Android now too.

hugh, most parts of almost every phone now come from the same slave factories, especially the screens.

Yeah i heard it was pretty easy to root. I think Android is a lot more open than what iOS anyway so allows you to do stuff.

A conflict material called Coltan is used in loads of phones too which is mined in the Congo. Loads of kids are made to work in the mines and shit. There was a Vice documentary on it.

Yeah, there was an Extreme Worlds episode there as well with old Kempy. Seriously scary place, but the situation has gotten a lot better since awareness has increased (allegedly)

The only reason apple products are made so cheaply with the best products is because of the chinese workers being paid pathetically bad wages for long hard hours with minimal breaks

Daily Mail :cornlol:

Can't really blame Apple for what happens there though, there are other major companies that use those factories like Foxconn and China doesn't have the best track record for human rights

Many electronics parts come from Foxconn and have for many years.
That's one of the main reasons I stuck to Blackberry which are made in Canada (well most, some models are from Hungary and Malaysia and there's a couple of plants in Brazil & Mexico). It has internals from China too (like 99% of things these days), but not from Foxconn. Then there's the whole coltan thing yeah. Can't escape it all... but you can try to minimize it. Apple is responsible for about half of Foxconn's output as I read a while back.

With BB you sacrifice a lot IMO haha. I do tech support for basically anything we take a call on, but BB's have to be my least favourite handsets and OS. Just too unfriendly to the user, although I guess it's not exactly their target audience that tend to buy them.

To be fair, for what they were designed for they smash it, I just find them so needlessly expansive with numbing menu after menu. Build is nice too! Much better than Samsung judging by our call logs :cornlol:

Yeah for what I need on a daily, it's the best choice, and I must always have a QWERTY keyboard haha. Before that it was Nokias, I loved the e70.
Been looking at the BB Torch2 which has both a touch and keys though since I'm due for a free upgrade. Otherwise I've never been into apps/games, just productivity related ones which there are loads. The new OS is supposed to be a big leap forward, but I don't really keep up with it much.

Yeah that's fair. I got told at work that I need a better phone because I'm using a sony ericsson w810i.
I never have to turn it off, the battery lasts a week and it does calls and texts. If I wanted to post pictures of everything I eat and apply a filter to it, or any of the other junk that you can do I'd upgrade lol.

Working in tech support with the simplest handset getting quiet jollies out of everyone sat at their chairs looking up at a screen, then down at a screen all day.
