Re: Mixing snare with rest of track

Hey guys thanks a lot for all your help! I've now got 5 different projects saved. I know it may seem a bit ott but its the best way for me to learn. Each project has used a different technique with one of them containing a mixture of all techniques mentioned by you guys. A couple of the drums were clipping the channel faders but not the master.

I have read the money shot thread but I let the drums clip slightly as I watched a video from point plank that said its ok as they have extra headroom in daws but I guess this is bad practice so have sorted it but the track sounds the same tbh.

The project that sounds the best is the one where I've used a little ducking about 3db fast release on the synths and a little EQ cut on the synths around the frequency of the snare (I understand compression etc as I've played guitar for years just not actually produced so although I know what the tools do I need to learn when to use them and how to set them up in a software environment)

Tbh everyone's suggestions have helped so I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat. I still can't figure the side chain EQ so I guess this is an external plugin? It certainly sounds like it would work tho.

Can anyone suggest now after all that listening yesterday how I get around the fact that I now hate my track! My synths seem to have degraded in sound quality but I think it's just me cos I've heard it so much :/

It shouldn't be, most DAWs' stock VSTs should be able to handle this. In FLStudio it'd be the Peak Controller as the trigger, with Parametric EQ2 on the instrument that is to be 'ducked' then setup the EQ dip at the frequency the snare is hitting.

Nope not in ableton unfortunately :( unless I'm being proper dumb. EQ 8 doesn't have a sidechain neither does EQ 3, is there a freeware EQ that does this? Sounds like it could be the best option.

That's weird, I suggested it because I thought all daws could do it....pretty easy with reason's routing capabilities

Had a quick google and found this;

Sidechain EQ in Ableton? - http://glitchhopforum.com/glitch-hop-pr ... 10690.html
It seems as though this sidechainer doesn't have nearly the functionality I need to do what I'm looking for. I've been told by a few producers that apparently Fruity Loops has had the functionality to sidechain anything to anything built into the production suite for the last 5 years
