Mix Advice? How too make it sound like..?

Post by VirusTI » Wed Jul 25, 2012 5:00 pm

Okay guys, so I've just been mixing the track below on my new headphones and so far it's sounding pretty good IMO but still lacking something from the professionals, advice on the mix and how too improve would be greatly appreciated!

Try this: Put an EQ on the masterbus:

1.5-2db shelf boost below 150Hz, 2db cut at 200 and 500 with Q = 2..see if that makes it a little warmer...

A 2db cut at 200 would kill the snare. The snare is a little loud in the mix but that could easily be fixed with the volume fader. I also don't see why boosted the subbass region would make it any warmer.

Just did this, admittedly it does sound a bit better and less muddy in certain places, but not sure if that's just through these headphones...

Anywhere else I should boost / cut? Perhaps in the actual mix as opposed to just on a master track? Also specify exactly where please, 'mids' doesn't mean a lot too me, at least give me a range to go between, thanks :w:

This in particular, how do I make it warmer? A lot of my mixes have this problem! Where should I be boosting roughly?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "warmer", that could mean lots of things. Usually when people say warmer they need more top end. The real top end (above 10khz let's say) I would think of as "sparkly". I would think of warmth as somewhere from 1khz to 8khz, although some ranges in there don't sound so good. If you're applying EQ to the master bus I highly recommend subtractive EQ as it will cause less or no artifacts in your final track. I'll post the link on here when I get home later to a site that lists the basic EQ frequencies and how they shape the sound.

What would you suggest this track needs?

I would take out some of the squelchy high highs, and bring up that melody playing around 900hz-1100hz ( i think) The really high end synths are buzzing too loud and causing my ears to cringe =P.

Sounds good though (even thought this seems like a shameless promotion :corntard: )

Lower the snare and kick level 1 Db or so. When all the sounds are in the song, the kick and snare a losing power so sidechain the mids of the song with the snare and the lows of the song with the kick. <---- Make that subtle. That's all I noticed. Not a bad track although it lacks a solid hook to make the listening want to come back or get it stuck in their head. I like the incidentals that keep the track interesting. How long have you been producing?

Thanks bro, will try this out now :4: And nahh, not a shameless self promotion, would just like genuine advice on how too make at least one of my tunes sound pro, so I can apply that knowledge too all future tracks :h:

Will change levels now man, thanks! Also I've already got all the synths and the sub sidechained too the kick, which is four to the floor and strikes underneath every snare anyway, for added power, should I sidechain the things you suggested on top of what I currently have it like now, or change the current sidechains too how you suggested instead of keeping both?

Also, I've been producing kindda 4 months in total, maybe a bit more but it's been pretty on and off with long breaks because of exams D: And yeah I need too work on my ability too WRITE a decent tune as well, but trying too get the majority of the producing / technical side down first so I can really let my ideas flow

Thanks for all the help so far btw guys! :w:

Have you EQed the hitting frequencies of the kick and the snare out of the instruments that play at the same time? If not you should definitely do this. The kick generally hits at 100 and snare at 200 although those can definitely vary. No you should not add the sidechains that I recommended because that would make no difference if you already have everything sidechained to the kick.

Okay yeah I suspected the sidechain thing, everyone says "You need to sidechain" etc, but I have pretty much everything sidechained :P And yeah, the kick's peaking at 100 and the Snare at 200, I boosted those EQ's already ;-)

don't just boost those but also cut those frequencies out of the other instruments playing at the same time as the kick.

don't just boost those but also cut those frequencies out of the other instruments playing at the same time as the kick.
How would you remove those frequencies every time the kick strikes? I'm using the Channel EQ in Logic Pro 9

not everytime the kick strikes, just permanently cut out those frequencies
