If you draw an oval touching all the walls, don't put speakers, people, mics or instruments outside it.

Horribly blurry phone shot of my setup

KRK RP5s, Focusrite Saffire Scarlett, MacBook pro 15", pair of CDJ-200s, Denon DJM-100, Stanton turntable, assorted vinyl

Are my monitors way too close to my head or the wall? I know fuck all about speaker placement

they are definitely too low. ideal height for monitors, when you`re sitting is 100 - 110 cm. average desk height is 70 cm. You cant go wrong with buying speaker stands, you can hardly destroy them and can basically use them forever and in any studio setup you have in the future.

I would pull the desk out and place the monitors behind the desk on the speaker stands.
I stripped the screw on my monitor stand the day I opened the box, and haven't used them since.

Good monitor placement is symmetrical from one side of the wall to the parallel wall. You want your set up right in the middle. If you have a more rectangular room, set up your monitors so the sound will blast down the longer dimensions of your room. Also, I'm pretty sure you should pull your monitors forward unless you have a wall very close in back of you.

Well in the meantime I bought a pair of monitor stands and I reccomend them to anyone for a bedroom studio. I can easily adjust the height of the speakers now, have more room on my desk, clearer sound (just a bit) and I can move the speakers around if I feel the need.

lol i wish it was a hammond, it's a bontempi organ, the actual organ sound of it isn't all that but it does have some nice round bass sounds.

yeah it's practically covered in them, had to go onto the sides now too. notes with timecodes of things to sample, notes of ideas for tunes all kinds of stuff like that.
