You can mix with monitors, but I don't like too. I'll do some EQ and panning and all but then when I'm done, I'll mix it and tweak the EQ and add effects, etc.

Then some people do it all on headphones, some all on monitors.

One of my good friends did the same thing. He was all "holy shit dude you have to hear my system" and i went and played some mixes on it and it was just...pointless. All the detail and hard work spent making those tracks amazing was just lost in a sea of "brrrrrrrrrrrrr". I mean seriously, who puts 2 12s in a Miata?

My brother had 2 12" Kickers in a Honda Hatchback.

It was horrible. I was glad when he sold it and bought an Element. He left the system in the car when he sold it thank god. He literally only listens to Lil Wayne. Nothing else. Just Lil Wayne. I'm dead serious.

Distance between walls and monitors is also quite an important factor.

I don't even bother with monitors.
With my current speaker setup, there's several standing waves meeting and shit.. would be ridiculous to try
and monitor in here.
The distance between the ceiling and left channel is 2 feet and on the right it's over 10 feet

I have my speakers on my dresser. I only use them when people come over. I'm more of a headphone producer really.

I cant imagine you needing anything else at this stage. Thats the same setup I have, go for it. Audio Technica ATH-M50s can be purchased at GC for about $120-130 if you go online and have them match the lowest price you can find. If you can afford to spend more, go for the semi-open Beyer Dynamic DT880s.

I used to own the 8 G2's and felt they were too sub heavy and coloured, the vxt range however are much nicer to work with but come with a price. Even if OP went and tested them in the shop, they are going to sound different when you get them home. From the way the post is written i.e 'not enough bass for dubstep' I think OP is getting the context of this slightly wrong. Yes you want to know what's going on in the low end but you don't need some chest rattling system to be able to produce a decent low end of your mix, that comes with practise and being able to hear it helps, but you can get a feel for it by referencing and simply by prior knowledge of what works and what doesn't. Assuming your working in a bedroom set up, maybe not having treatment for a while and even when doing so things aren't perfect, all that having a very bass heavy system is going to do is detract from your monitoring and cause you problems.

You don't want your monitors sounding like the sub in your car. I assume you turn the bass up way more than it should be for attention and that's not good for producing. You want a clean response, not added bass or tweak this. You get what I'm saying.

I turn the bass down completely in the car and it's still way too loud.

My brother had a $3,500 custom system and had it turned all the way up. All you heard was the kick vibrating. I was like why the fuck would somebody spend $3,500 to listen to shit.

I don't have a sub or amp, but I spent $1,750 on a real quality system. I prefer a crisp sound more than overpowered bass.

unless your head unit puts out several hundred watts and you bought speakers to replace the stock ones that can handle that, what the hell did you spend that much money on if there's no amp or sub?

i strongly disagree, i put subsonic bass in my songs and i dont give a **** if the listener has the subs to pick it up . and hearing that 30hz bass from a block away sounds alot cooler than 60hz bass.

i would lol , i am a basshead and love bass, but also somewhat of an audiophile, as long as i can hear the hi's and they are crisp im good

Even though it came with a Sony system, I got some Focal PS130 for the front and back door then Polk db351 for the pillars.
I did get a JBL MS-8 EQ and a small 150w amp but I haven't touched it. I payed Ford to install it.

It only costed an extra $30 when I got service. My Dad works there as a mechanic so he usually get me cheap service, occasionally free. I even got my car $5,000 under what it was for sale for.

I agree - 30hz sounds lovely on a good system. I try to keep my sub between 40-50hz but do drop down a bit occasionally.

Get the matching krk sub

So how many people here have a dedicated sub with their monitors? I choose not to use a sub - from what i understand about monitoring, whatever frequencies your speakers are good at, your mix will lack. So if you have a sub, i would have thought that you'd compensate by turning the bass down? Also in every masterclass video i've seen the producer uses monitors with no sub.

On the flipside - a sub might allow you to hear the bass more accurately. But bass traps would be important to tame the resonant frequencies.

I use krk rokit 8's, and i can't hear the sub clearly. I'm going to invest in room treatment soon, and i use the sub in my car to check the low end. I also constantly check it on headphones but they're not great for sub either.

So if im gonna get some headphones to mix on then i really dont need to spend 400 dollars on a pair of monitors right? i have some logitech standard media speakers right now that im using. i could just reference on them then when it comes to mixing ill use headphones. does that sound right?
