key detecion software or mp3 to midi converter?
Hi guys, is there a software that detects what keys are played in a song or a mp3 to midi converter so that you can study your favourite melodies? The tune i wanted to check out was bloodfire - jammin as im making a similar tune atm but my melody seem to be a bit too complex and not as catchy and simple as the jammin melody. Obviously i dont want to rip off the song, i simply just want to "study" it and get some pointers. I bought the tune ages ago on beatport and it said the rootkey was D#minor but there not that many keys in that scale so if someone could let me know i would really appreciate it. Thanks

What do you mean there isnt many keys in D# minor?
buy an instrument, learn how to play, learn about music theory etc, when yo have done that you will be able to learn any melody by ear and will have the knowledge needed to really grasp what is going on in it and why.

Honestly I wouldn't advise this but if you want a rough idea you could isolate the melody and then get Melodyne to analyse it and export to midi. I've done this before with instrument riffs and it does work quite well... but it's kind of like cheating

Re: key detecion software or mp3 to midi converter?
Melodyne splits up the audio into each key. But it doesn't convert to MIDI I don't think. But you can still get the jist of how it's played.

Nice one guys (Skrew & mthrfnk) thats all i wanted to know! I dont want the melody as a midi file i just wanted to have a look at it and ill try melodyne...there is so much im trying to learn atm i dont have time or the money to BUY an instrument! Im sitting up to 5am every night reading about music theory, compression all that stuff i didnt think i had to know about when i first decided to start making tunes! So Brian your superiorism is unnecessary as im doing everything i can to learn this shit properly!

Im not trying to be superior, I asked an honest question and gave honest advice. A lot of people who make music on a computer and try and learn music theory get in a lot of bad habits and make of lot of bad presumptions about what music theory really means and how it relates to writing music. Dj Madd in his Q&A here said he didnt use compression, and I can tell you for sure theres a ton of dance music out there made by people with no music theory knowledge so don't feel like you can't make good music without them. But if you want to learn music theory then learning an instrument is probably the best way, thats an honest bit of advice, when you've been playing along to other peoples tunes for a while you'll naturally develop an ear for being able to tell when you are playing the same note as what youre hearing and you will become familiar with basic chords etc. All you need is a little midi keyboard, but I understand if any expense is too much expense, no shame in that.
Prob wont work for dubstep as its too obscure but you can download midi versions of most famous songs, if you google 'midi' and possibly the name of some slightly more known music you rate then you can download full midi versions which should load into your daw and allow you to analyse all the different layers and what notes they are playing.

Hi Brian, Ive got a Fantom x6,an mpc and a beast of a PC. I moved to Scotland from Sweden when i was 18 but i quit my job and moved back to Sweden about 2 months ago so all my stuff is still in Scotland and i need to get money together to send it back, so for now im on my dads shitty laptop trying to make stuff in Reaper (the only DAW his laptop can handle)...I started messing about in reason when i was 18 i am now 23 and at first i didnt know i had to EQ all my sounds, layer things (none of the "advanced" stuff). I though it was just a case of using some drum samples and write a melody over it maybe some vocal samples or whatever. I was gutted when i realised how little i really know about music production and the whole package that comes with it. I know i can make some awsome music (i have already proven this to myself) but for the past year ive realised i need to do alot more than i have been doing so therefor im trying to read online and watch tutorials on things im unsure of. Its not that i cant make tunes its just that i want to get serious with it and u know urself that there is alot more behind it than just actually putting something together. Ill get there this year or next tho. Thanks for clearing that up anyway.
