First off... WTF is a "uni." Obviously it's some european shit where you spend alot of time sitting around with nothing to do huh?
I think you should use a torrent to grab a couple different programs... not that i advocate theft (cuz it IS theft) but call it a temporary theft (borrowing). Find out which program you gel with/mesh with /like/ are good at and stick with that one. After you get the hang of it then be a "stand up guy" and buy a real copy.

good thinking.

There's shedloads of cheap or free software out there that's at least 97% as good as the stuff you'll pay £££ for - some people would say some of it's better. Start with that and upgrade stuff when you feel the need and when you start to know how to use your stuff well enough that you can tell what its limitations are.
Saying you need expensive software to start making dubstep is like saying you need expensive boots to play for man u - maybe you do, maybe you don't, but for most of us, not having top end kit isn't the limiting factor...
go for soundforge and be like burial...... hes a genious and he isnt a musician... thats what he says about himself. Dont misjudge software... you can be pro with fruity or with logic... its all about the mind mate. Even you have logic, with bad ideas you cant come far, so just start with a program like cubase or reason.. something like that. You could use fruityloops to but it has a poor soundengine and if you wanna get quality out of fruity, youve to be a smartass techno-boy and youre not that so...

the export doesnt give a clear sound...
if you make a track with reason/cubase or fruity and you will export that on the same quality, youll hear a HUGE differents in quality.

To the original poster. 12 quid is way not the right price for Ableton Live. Just get the crack.
Now before I revive the argument that cracks are bad for the industry, which they are to a good degree, I think its perfectly acceptable for a beginner to try a few cracks out rather than paying 500 euro for a piece of software they may never use again.
My copy of Ableton Live has been legit since version 1. I paid for all those upgrades. After I tried out a crack to see if it was worth ditching Cubase for it.
Yeah and software-only is also OK. You don't have to have hardware.

i use sample packs.... why not ? the packs are for sampling... so you can use it. The only thing is you didnt sampled it yourself cause maybe you dont have old dusty recordz with cool drumloops or something like that.

im also in the same boat as the original poster. except ive got a wank job.
been listening to drum n bass for years and now dubstep, and im dying to get started.
somone showed me reason, but i couldnt get my head round it. especially the bit where you can program drum beats using those little square orangey button things. maybe i should keep trying.
im up on 3dsmax, premier and photoshop, so i reckon i could get the hang of production s/ware too.
also, somone said burial uses soundforge? i think ive used that to chop up mixes. how would you use this prog to make tunes? just as a sequencer n then use effects plug ins too?

burial is a 1 of kinder.... you only have 1 channel where you can put in your samples. Burial didnt want to learn an other program. Also you dont rly have fx's with soundforge... its not rly a sequencer program. You also dont have a bpm counter or quantize mode. So what burial did was quite special.... maybe RLY special nobody did that kinda stuff and got it released. But that wasnt rly his goal but he send some tracks to kode9 and he liked it, so he gave burial a chance to release his shit with hyperdub.
