If you just want to get a good pair of headphones and discard the monitors:
Sennheiser HD650 -$499.95
Sony MDR-7520 - $429.99
AKG Q701 - $399.99
Friend or mine had the Quincy Jones Q701 and they sounded pretty good. I'm soon getting the Sony MDR-7520 and Guitar Center had the Seinnheiser pair and they sounded great with the song that was playing. (Some rock-pop song)

Audio Technica ATH-M50s
I swear they should give me my next pair for free for as often as I recommend them
I think you should still get some KRKs. at least the 5s ( I have RPG6)
They're way cheap and so worth it.

Re: Why size krks?
I've got 5 inch cones on my monitors and I make do. I monitor sub bass on headphones. I know where it should be hitting DB wise in reference to other elements anyway. You'll never fully hear the sub unless you actually buy a sub... they are expensive though and its advised to buy the matching sub to your speakers.
If you're going down that route you may as well get smaller monitors, they will pick out details better and you'll get tighter mixes on them, and you'll still have the sub for the bottom end.
