that's what they're "for" but they don't work perfectly.
I've known plenty people prescribed it, and it's true for the actual ADD folks it assists them in focusing but it doesn't "calm them down" as some would claim. I've heard plenty people "oh, if you actually ave ADHD it doesn't tweak u it calms you down"
No. It is amphetamines. It always speeds up your nervous system, no matter who you are. Just that being on speed helps all of us focus, and those who suffer ADD prior to dosing appear to calm down since it allows them to focus on one thing at a time.

It still speeds up their heart, makes them shake, makes their hands sweaty and clammy, kills their appetite and keeps them awake all night. I have a little cousin who's on it now and i feel bad for him. He doesn't understand drugs at all, and just takes what the doctor gives him thinking it's medicine, yet when he talks to me he says "when i take my focus pill i don't feel good. I can do my homework and stuff better but I can't sit still and i feel weird and i can never sleep at night. " then i ask him what he wants for lunch and he eats nothing more than half a scone. all day.

He's well tweaked out on phet. That's the problem.

I love adderall and vyvanse for an upper, always take em with weed and i love the high.
But i hate the idea of putting kids on phet to deliver higher test scores. There's gotta be a better way.

I'm prescribed concerta(ritalin xr) for adhd and it works well. It calms and focuses me, end of story. Seriously, you don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about - if it doesn't work then why would a medical professional prescribe it? It gets annoying when there's so many misconceptions about adhd, everyone seems to be an expert. You should really try studying a subject before sharing your opinion on it.

It sounds like your cousin is on too high a dose, although his side effects will probably diminish as he gets used to the meds.

In short, drugs work different for everyone. I really like going to a tune and doing some lsd, and then working on a tune the day after. I find a lot of inspiration through doing this!

Fuck all that, when i took it for recreation it felt weird and i did NOT feel my self at all.

Bowls, beers, and blunts help with creativity for me.... too much alcohol tho and i will end up with a mess of a project in the morning. But.... When im very drunk i tune into Mozart's soul and turn into a pretty wicked piano player.

Opiates dont really help production, shrooms ill end up sitting there staring at the wall while a drum beats going and then the voice in my head will tell me to put on some excision, never got to produce on acid, E is the shit while making music..

just didn't feel like drinking anymore
never really had a bad experience, save the few times i puked/got in trouble/fought as a kid

in fact i'm pretty sure it's just having gone away to college that made me quit. Everyone there around me who drank did it way too much, too frequently, and i kinda felt liek i was surrounded by obnoxious, loud losers who spent all their time at shit bars or shit house parties .. so i stuck to smoking bud and doing schoolwork in solace.

Wasn't very social, smoked bare weed, got really high grades, it just worked out for me that way

I have nothing against drink, I just hated the users who i went to school with and it altered the course of my personal development and drug use

I didn't say it was perfect, I said it works. Adderall's purpose is to help you focus and for me it does just that. When I was child I was prescribed Ritalin and got straight A's the next semester. It helped me focus and while it may have looked like it calmed me down, my mind was racing. I am not prescribed it now because I dont have health insurance but when I do have access to it, I can definitely get into a zone and focus. I can finish whole tunes in one session. 13 hours was about my longest session and that was a few years ago. I dont use it anymore because its never around and I dont particularly enjoy being tweaked out. Bottom line is, drugs aren't good. You become dependent on them and cant get anything at all done if you don't have them. If you have never done drugs, do yourself a favor and dont get into the routine. Its a dark and windy road that could turn your life upside down.

Kind of wish I still did acid as it seems like it would be a fun time. Then again I tried on shrooms and just couldent get started, got super frustrated and had to go outside for a nature walk in the forest. Maybe I need to try again and work on an existing project. I think I wrote most of my songs stoned as I used to put my BPM at XXX.420 when I was stoned, and most of my old songs are at that tempo. The downside of producing stoned is it's too easy to lose focus and get lost in waves of reverb and delay.
Think it's time to roll one up.

As for the adderall/ritalin discussion - people who aren't prescribed it or 'need' it, will usually find speedy and meth-like effects. I was prescribed ritalin growing up, took it a few times and ended up passing out in class (made me extremely tired). I didn't take it any more. Years later as an adult, adderall does the same thing. I fall asleep shortly after taking 1 pill. My friend is prescribed them, and him and another friend abuse them as speed. They offer me some every time, and I usually refuse, but when I do take it - boom out cold haha. I forgot about that one time, and he gave me a couple on a long drive home after playing in another city so I could stay awake on the drive and ended up almost crashing the vehicle from falling asleep. His are fairly high dosage I think, so if I took about half of that I suppose it would just calm me down to normal status (like it's supposed to with legitimate use). Other stimulants have the same effect on me, including coke which is why I've never liked it.

@ill mindset You should be able to get it free from the gov, that's how my friend gets it. He gets 120 adds a month free just by filling out some forms saying that he can't afford it. California must have something similar being a fairly left-leaning place.

Just plain alcohol works the best for me. I think the same way and still know (roughly) what I'm doing, but I don't turn down ideas I normally would, which means I'll just spend some time making it sound good and then end up with a tune I wouldn't have dared making otherwise. When I'm sober I usually try something out, then discard it and never really get started. Or I spend too much time perfecting my sounds and losing the flow of the song. Other drugs don't really do it for me though.

The more I drink the trippier stuff I do though. When I made my 'best' track I was so drunk I thought I was remixing Adele and named the project as such, while it was in fact Ellie Goulding. I also found like a 16 db boost at 120 hz on the EQ on my reese because I thought it wasn't bassy enough. Kinda lol'd when I saw all the weird shit I did the day after, otherwise it was a killer track though haha.

On the whole adderrall thing, for 80 % of the population, add and ADHD medications WIlL increase and narrow your focus... It just so happens that a large portion of people perscribed these medication have been wrongly diagnosed

Weed - Depends what weed I'm smoking, if its a nice Sativa and a nice day I'll be inspired to make something really nice. If its Indica I'll end up watching a movie and eating instead

MDMA - Only tried producing with it twice, ending up doing a solo with my keyboard and jamming out to my own live performance in the piano roll for half an hour before finding someone to talk to and hug

Music Production and Drugs

Post by DubMikey » Sat Jan 26, 2013 10:51 am

First and foremost, I'd like to say that this is not a thread for discussing how bad drugs are for your health. If you don't like drugs, that's fine, but don't start preaching.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on being under the influence of whatever, when producing. Like, do you get new ideas when hitting the bong?

I can only imagine that we have a few people on here who likes to hit the ganja everyone once in a while.

Have any of you ever produced while under the influence of weed, alchohol, amphetamines, LSD or whatever? And how did it affect your production?

I, personally, have only tried producing while under the influence of weed and I most say that I quite like it, as I find new ideas to pop up when you run dry in your sober state. I've never really produced while being drunk, simply because I don't feel like. I've always wanted to try producing after an LSD trip, as I've heard that your creavity should be somewhat "boosted" for a couple of weeks after your trip.

I don't do drugs myself because of the job I have outside of my production hobby, but I could understand how people may find it beneficial to production. Personally I find it difficult to produce when drunk even though I think I'm going to produce something awesome before I load it up.

After I did molly(mdma) back at a show in Dec 2011. I completed two tracks in such a short time, and made some intense shit/actually wanted to make stuff. Shit fucks with your brain though... haven't done it in awhile though...last few times were bonk.

Marijuana I smoke a ton...I usually become too lazy/tired to produced. But if I don't get really high, I usually come up with some okay stuff.

But...

HANDS DOWN.

I've produced some good shit while being drunk as fuck haha. I'm so interested in making stuff and it feels like I'm on a rolllll. I get so concentrated after I come home from a nights drinking and write shit. I get a creativity burst for sure.

Drink some Vodka(Grey Goose, Ciroc), Rum(Sailor Jerrys, Bacardi), or Beer!(Blue Moon is the best) I want a beer now.

P.S I don't smoke cigs. Haven't really done any other drug.
I was just about to make a thread about this. Weird.

I produce shit whilst drinking, being hungover is different though - I've produced some chilled tracks the night after a heavy night out.

When i used to smoke weed i always thought it really helped, but now I've stopped i realized i would just make some shit loop and listen to it on repeat for hours. Without it i'm a lot more structured to my approach to making music and imo have better ideas. Its basically the same with everything, when stoned my brain would lie to me and be like you do everything much better when high but as soon as i stopped i realised what a load of bullshit this was and all it was doing was slowing me down.
