How do I make Synths like these?
I've been wondering for a long time on how to make the synths like Xilent and Seven Lions. If you don't know who they are, here are some videos with the synths I'm talking about.

I'm using Logic and Massive. If anyone has any input I'd really appreciate it

I suppose you are talking about those super-sawesque sounds. Just search for a supersaw tutorial on youtube then get creative with unison & reverb & alternative waveforms, stereo width and so on.
( cant tell what you are really talking about though because you didn't name any specific times)
also, this has been asked countless times already.

I edited the times in, forgot to do that originally. I've searched for this before and didn't find too much useful information.
Re: How do I make Synths like these?
yep, those are super saw, or similar synths. you have to get creative to get a good sound like they do. Nobody here will be able to tell you exactly what you have to do in massive to achieve that exact sound, because it's not that simple. Just go ahead and start off with a supersaw and see what you can do.Hate wrote:I edited the times in, forgot to do that originally. Re: How do I make Synths like these?
ive heard a good tip about saw chords, i forgot who said it but, a good start would be to layer 2+ instances of massive for the chord and apply different parameters each instance BUT all are detuned saw waves. As you get higher in the frequency range, the more your saws should be detuned and panned out (hard panning isn't necessary) example:C3 would be mono with a generous high cut and gentle low cut with little detuning, C4 could be more panned out with extra detuning per oscillator with a gentle high cut and a generous low cut, then C5 could be panned out nicely with some dimension expander and polyphonic with more detuning per oscillator with a deep or aggresive low cut and no high cut at all, it should become this nice giant supersaw that's crisp, then you can apply extra effects as a whole or separately per octave (or bands)Reversed wrote:yep, those are super saw, or similar synths. you have to get creative to get a good sound like they do. Again, 2-3 Saw oscillators with different tune and reverb.

Re: How do I make Synths like these?
If you wouldn't come up with "supersaws" as your answer I would be really interested in it
How do you achieve your sound? maybe it's just the chords that make them sound so dramatic in your song
keep up your good work..

Re: How do I make Synths like these?
it is about the chords being played but there's a bit more to it, the exact notes need to be drawn in for the octave above (even the octave above that if you want).
the rest is experimentation, i find distorting it with high passed white noise helps make it sound more airy.

Re: How do I make Synths like these?
Well yeah there is a supersaw involved ha! We use 3 layers when we do it.manudiao wrote:If you wouldn't come up with "supersaws" as your answer I would be really interested in itHow do you achieve your sound? maybe it's just the chords that make them sound so dramatic in your song

1: A really thick modulated bass, with lots of highs in it.
2: The supersaw (Im sure you already know about making supersaw's)
3: Topline Synth: 9 times out of 10 we will just grab a nice sounding preset out of Nexus for this.
Now the thick bass will of course just be one note (the root note). Then with the supersaw just draw up the chords accordingly to the root note, like mentioned copy over certain notes to above octaves (experiment to see which is best). Then with the topline we usually grab the middle note in the chord, for example if it were a C chord we would take either D# or E depending on whether the song was in major or minor, and use that note on top of the whole sound. Then just seperate the 3 sounds with EQ and Stereo Widening. Hope this helped

Re: How do I make Synths like these?
yes, that's exactly the right direction. I'm not that bad in music theory and know how to construct songs.(at least that's what I think
) I think my problem is more related to my mixing skills this time. I can make that supersaw, I can build a gnarly bass but it seems like I can't make them work together and get a proper mix ;(

Re: How do I make Synths like these?
Well if you can make the sounds easily then yeah your problem is the mixing part. Have you tried separating them with stereo wideners? If not try that, we use Izotope Ozone 4, on each of them individually but quite subtle, and then on all of them after they have been sent to a bus/group. Make the very lows mostly if not all the way mono, usually the 2nd freq band will start about 200hz - 300hz. We bring that out abit to make the mids abit wider, then the top mids we widen them half way, and the very tops we take all the way.manudiao wrote:yes, that's exactly the right direction. Re: How do I make Synths like these?
apparently it seems like I got a new pair of ears over night
I'm quit happy now with my mixdown. Also your tip with ozone and its stereo widener was gold. It saved me from building a rack in a rack in rack in a rack in rack, although I thought it would kill my cpu (this thing is a real cpu hog). Thanks for all the help and patience mate

Re: How do I make Synths like these?
I understand the bass and the topline, but I'm having trouble getting a really nice supersaw. I love the one in your Morgan Page remix, I'm trying to get something close to that or Seven Lions.culturecode wrote: Well yeah there is a supersaw involved ha! We use 3 layers when we do it.
