KRK RP8 vs RP6 vs VXT4

Post by Hashkey » Thu Aug 16, 2012 6:13 pm

Hello! I wanted your humble opinion on these monitors.
I'm about to buy one of these but I really can't decide.

My Room is 3 x 4 Meters.
No acoustic treatment.
No Bass Traps.

What would you suggest?

RP6. In a small room you dont want a big speaker or so I have heard.

Or get the 8s and treat your room well. Too much bass in an untreated room will drown out the rest of your spectrum. Keep that in kind.

RP8s are actually pretty large for 8" monitors, they take up a lot more space than most other ones I've come across. I've had a pair for a couple of years and kinda wish I'd gone for 5s or 6s to leave a bit more desk space free

If you can afford the VXTs then the decision shouldn't be too hard. Small room so you want small speakers, so the RP6 or the VXT4 and the VXT4s are better so get them?

i havent heard the vxt's but having listened to the RP8's, RP6's and RP5's in a shop, i must say that the RP6's are a much more rounded speaker than the other two which is why i went for them.
I have a incredibly small room but i felt the RP8's are too boomy anyway and the RP5's lack the low end so id say the RP6's :)

the rp6 has treated me pretty well, although in a smaller room I would consider the vxts. They're pretty nice!

All good suggestiona, i think I'll go for the 6'.
I've got another little question:

In my room. I've got. An ultra heavy fabric courtain 2cm of thickness.

Does it work as a bass trap?

Keep in mind that the KRK 6 is a hell of a lot louder (without losing apparent sound quality) than the VXT4, obviously, so if you wanna use 'em for casual listening too, i would really go with those.

no brainer, vxt4's are far superior for monitoring than any of the rp series.

Surely if you use bass-heavy monitors, all your mixes will sound bass-weak on other systems, because the bass-heavy monitors will give you a false impression of bass...

I use Yamaha HS-80's, because they're powerful, but with a very flat response. Totally honest across all frequencies, so I know what to expect on other systems.

Shit cats though, not the cute fluffy ones.
I would do a Shaun Of The Dead on your ass if you did that. With the Swamp 81 catalog.

Bass heavy does not always mean more bass, it could also be a better response to lower bass frequencies.

Its a difficult one really, I wouldn't touch the RP range for shit! There just a blag imo the VXT range is much more like a studio monitor but still the 4s are a bit small if ya ask me but they are great for their price. So many VXTs and a sub? Or save some money and get summit like adams or anything in the slightly higher price range?

If I was on a proper budget I would rather get some second hand NS10s and a shitty samson amp until I could afford summit good lol

I was in the same boat when I bought my monitors and I just waited it out and saved my money as I thought there no point in buying temporary monitors when I could just by one pair that I love!

I bought the rp8 but now I'm regretting it since they are defective. One speaker has a different tone from the other and on some resonant frquencies one does a strange buzz and the other doesn't.
I'm taking em back and probably I'm buying some VXT4.

what shold I do?

buzz is probably due to soundcard/grounding problems rather than the monitors, i have 3 year old RP6s, they work fine.

As for the adams, they are freaking AWESOME. But again, really studio monitor stuff, so not really for casual listening.
