maybe the guy just wants to get some experience, you can't expect a one dollar master to sound like an angelical choir.

"I master songs for just $1.

You may hear a 128k MP3 for free. If you aren't satisfied with this, don't pay for the high quality version."

Can't beat that in terms of low risk.

Fuck off.

Side note: your "master" sounds worse than the original.

Most people here probably make all the music within the one daw project, probably not a lot of mastering needed anyway.

The guy did ask me to take the example down. It was my entry into a competition on KVR forum, and is not really "stolen," I just didn't have his permission to use it to sell a service.

Anyway, I'm using freeware. Usually:
SplineEQ
ReaXcomp
X-citer
GMulti (for the stereo adjustment)

I wanted to be able to say I make money as an audio engineer, and it would be good to make a name for myself. I am really an amateur, though. I guess it is fair to say you get what you pay for...

not really using a lot of plugins there.. what about limiters, expanders, de-essers?
how do you treat phase alignment as well?
also it sounds like your not doing any mid/side processing.
wouldn't surprise me if your doing this all in 44100KHz..
i think you should do this for free until you get a lot better.

I recommend going free for the meantime, in the mastering game it's a general rule (like most things) that you get what you pay for. I know $1 for a master doesn't sound like a lot but if you're asking somebody to hand over their hard work when there's no guarantee that the final result will be an improvement then it only be fair you offer your service for free in the meantime (at least until you have some more experience)

It wasn't until I had invested at least 2K in my monitoring system and had spent many hours in front of them that I could justify charging anything for mastering. Even then it has taken a massive amount of treatment to get things to the point where I can hear exactly what a track needs instead of fumbling about guessing at what can improve it! :)

If you're serious about this look into a serious monitoring setup (you need to be looking at least the larger adam series (A7X/A8X) combined with a sub) and then matching that investment in the acoustic treatment to be able to hear what's going on, in the meantime keep at it and keep training those ears!

He shows you a 128 version for free though. That seems pretty low risk

just wondering about this, I was under the impression that you're supposed to do all your stuff at 44100... Understand that I'm no expert in this stuff so I ask why not 44100?

There is nothing wrong with working at 44100. Also, I can't imagine any good mastering engineer ever using a de-esser. That makes absolutely no sense.
