I used to work in a supermarket, the butcher showed me hundreds of maggots behind the freezer. I saw the box of rubbish that he made mince out of, after 3 days when it went green he cut those bits off, and made frozen burgers out of the rest. He didn't wash or throw away the ones he dropped on the floor! I used to eat a pork pie every day back then, he told me it was made from crushed pigs heads. If its not an identifiable chunk of meat, then its made out of crap. Its a business and it has to make a profit.
Thats what set me off, and I became increasingly vegetarian over the next 2 years. Cycling past the awful smell of the big Stanley Abattoir in Liverpool most days for a couple of years led to me becoming increasingly vegan.
I don't preach, you can all eat what you like. I just don't want to eat a corpse.

ch3 wrote:Magma's view on farming seems a little bit idyllic to be fair. Yeah, I do believe some people still farm the way you describe, with respect for animals that lead, as you said, 'luxurious albeit short' lives, but unfortunately this is not the case for most of the meat industry. The fact that it is 'industry' is very wrong in itself. I don't think I need to describe what conditions animals are kept in, there is enough footage and photos floating around. And that applies to meat, dairy, eggs...
Agree with a lot of this. I didn't really meant to imply that current farming was so idyllic, just that the concept of raising animals to kill them for meat isn't inherently "bad"... if farming's done correctly, it can create a decent existence for both animal and farmer. Obviously, as with most industries we allow the mighty dollar to get in the way of ethical practise.... from squeezing too many turkeys into a dark shed to razing thousands of acres of rainforest to provide grazing land... we definitely have to reform farming; meat should probably be a lot more expensive to discourage such intensive production/consumption.

Definitely didn't mean I support battery chicken farming or packing 500 lambs into a tiny truck for them to trample each other on their overnight journey to the abatoir though. Cruelty is still cruelty. :w:

Aliens almost exclusively talk to corn instead of us when they visit.
