Sweet Exorcist - Clonk, aka dubstep from 1990

Post by clonks coming » Fri Jul 20, 2007 8:38 pm

One of the first bands signed to Warp records back in 1989, they produced a few 12" and an album. Pioneers of the 'bleep' sound they wrote the template for many, they consisted of Richard H Kirk and DJ Parrot and disappeared without trace. However, their legacy holds, in my opinion, one of the finest 'dubstep' 12" ever produced. Clonk.

Amazingly you can still pick this rare artefact up on e-bum for a very fair price. It also appeared on a Warp compilation. Predating the whole 'wobblestep' genre by a mere 15 years or so, the track on this comp, Freebass, is a woofer destroyer and makes no attempt to be anything other than a huge slab of undiluted BASS.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience of the band and indeed the track. Their album is fantastic, but its much more bleep orientated. I think they have been criminally overlooked in the groundbreaking manner in which they went about their business. LFO's bass heavy track 'LFO' still gets namechecked, but never Clonk.

It would be amazing to hear Clonk mixed in on a big rig with much more contemporary dubstep just to hear how it holds up.

Enjoy - Sweet Exorcist - Clonk (freebass)

Yeah, they released 2x12" with 6 mixes of 'test'. testone, testtwo, testthree, and so on. Great tracks. They still sound crisp and contemporary, very stripped back and chunky.

Yeah, back 'in the day' i only ever heard Clonk played out once, in a 'nitespot' where no-one knew or cared about what they were listening to and the sound system was woefully underprepared for such relentless bass. Sweet Exorcist seemed to be making tracks of great quality and vision, just for fun. Hope you enjoyed hearing it again!!

It's always been about the bass for me, always. Bring on Dubcamp!!
