yeah there has been the odd dance track hit every now and then but op has a point for the like 3-4 past years basically every tune in top40 is the same exact formulaic hyphy trance/dance/electrohouse tune... it's madness how similar they are.. i'm sure u guys know the last eurovision contest winner, the swedish bird with the "euphoria" tune. i know it went straight to massive rotation on commercial stations but not long before that there was this tune that had the exact same kind of vocal hook in it.. the synths, sounds, melodies, chord progressions and everything are so much alike i can't believe it. dunno which tune really started it? what about flo ridas 'you spin my head right round' or whatever it's called

Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
Oh god. It's still played on German radio every day. Germans LOVE cheesiness that takes itself way too seriously. I always thought it sounded like video game music.Brian Oblivion wrote:
But naw, this recent trend is people just jumping on the 'EDM' bandwagon. There's always been 'top 40 dance music', but all the shit that's coming out now all comes from that Bodyrox tune from a few years back.

well, it depends where you come from I guess. I cant really comment on what the charts in finland or america or australia etc have been doing, but certainly in the uk the majority of chart music has been dance tracks since about 1991. Ballads and boybands/girl bands have done well as one would expect (although in themselves, often dance flavoured), they would have had almost as much representation as dance. Rnb, hip hop, rock, indie/britrock/britpop (however you class it) all had their odd hits but even added together would still have been a noticeable minority against dance.
thats an amazingly awful tune. I remember it well. But still, thats 1997, Ill raise you 1993idontreallygiveashit wrote:all wrong, it was this:

according to wiki it went to number 1 in "Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and in the United Kingdom", sold half a million singles in the uk. 2 Unlimited had over 10 chart hits before 1997, 3 albums. Barbie Girl was huge, the Venga Boys were around then too, they sold bucketloads, those doddgy guys that did the Macarena tune, there was definitely some really bad crap floating around at that point. Id argue worse than what we have now.
Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
Barbie Girl is an awesome tune. That is all.

I don't think the OP was wondering what the first ever electronic "hit" was, just what started a trend directly leading the tunes we can hear all the time on the radio. I was just kidding about barbie girl, it was most likely the Day 'n' Night tune and WHEN LOVE TAKES OVEERRRRRR YEAH YEAHHHH YOU KNOW YOU CANT DENYYYY

I want rap music to take over pop again.
I miss when timbaland and neptunes produced everything.

Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
i agree with genevieve a lot of the shitty electro house/trance/pop crossover stuff can be traced back to bodyrox - yeah yeah. obviously a lot of other stuff has influence too - especially eurodance stuff from back in the day. i just turned the tv on and theres a generic rnb singer singing over an almost identical riff to alice deejay better off alone lol
i'm still kind of shocked that electro house derived stuff (including brostep/skrillex pish) has firstly maintained it's popularity for so long and secondly has now taken over america -although it does have everything needed to be popular - its repetitive, catchy, brainless, all the songs sound irritatingly similar and the songs have massive brock out synths - its a no brainer really!

Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
Yep i noticed that too. I think generally most people dont care about music or find music that enjoyable and just what something simple to sing along to when their going to work. I guess thats why those that's what i call music[/b] cds sell so well. And then once in a while you will get a good artists or band who arent that well know to the the general public have one hit and then people buy their albums in millions.Like Adele who i think is ok but her albums mainly 21 has been up and down the charts for ages well after release. And then just in everyday life when you look at when people listen to music you rarely see people just listen and enjoying music.topmo3 wrote:yeah there has been the odd dance track hit every now and then but op has a point for the like 3-4 past years basically every tune in top40 is the same exact formulaic hyphy trance/dance/electrohouse tune... it's madness how similar they are.. i'm sure u guys know the last eurovision contest winner, the swedish bird with the "euphoria" tune. i know it went straight to massive rotation on commercial stations but not long before that there was this tune that had the exact same kind of vocal hook in it.. the synths, sounds, melodies, chord progressions and everything are so much alike i can't believe it. dunno which tune really started it? what about flo ridas 'you spin my head right round' or whatever it's called
Sorry to kinda go off track
Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
I would say a good 50% of people don't really have any taste in music and have never made an effort to expand on their musical tastes beyond what is fed to them by Radio 1.
Which is sad
But I suppose they just aren't into it. I find this kind of weird since if I am sitting listening to a good tune by myself I can find the music makes my whole body react, I get goosebumps, a sense of euphoria, its something that no other art form delivers to me. It's like a drug

Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
Well, to me it's like asking what started the trend of hip hop tunes being in pop music right now, you cant point at any tune in the last 7/8 years and say "that's where it started", its just been a constant thing going back to the 80s/90s. If the question is why does a lot of hip hop and rnb pop now sound like European dance pop, yeah probably the Black Eyed Peas, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake etc kicked off something that's gathered speed and now seems to be snowballing ferociously, but its a blending of 2 long established strains of pop music that's been going on for a while. I think depending on where you are from and how old you are maybe it seems like something has significantly changed, I know a lot of Americans seem shocked by developments. America being spawned from the Uk and sharing our root culture/language, and yet the Uk being part of Europe despite not being able to understand a word they say, maybe were exceptional in the way we've always had both sides of it in our charts since the 80s when it kicked off. To me I hear Kelly Rolland singing a song Kylie Minogue could have sung 10 years ago or Rozalla 10 years before that, its mundanely familiar and sounds just like the horrible crap I've been suffering on the radio for the last 20 years.idontreallygiveashit wrote:I don't think the OP was wondering what the first ever electronic "hit" was, just what started a trend directly leading the tunes we can hear all the time on the radio.

Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
I think that's a very common and unfortunate misunderstanding round these parts. They ARE into the music, they just might not be into it the same way as you are or into the same sort of stuff that you like listening to. They might just want something in the background to liven up their days a little, have a bit of jolly good fun while slightly drunk on the dancefloor, etc. One man's meat is another man's poison.hugh wrote:I would say a good 50% of people don't really have any taste in music and have never made an effort to expand on their musical tastes beyond what is fed to them by Radio 1.

They probably can't understand why we would choose to listen to what we do either. Neither would your typical lover of classical, country & western, psytrance or folk. Everyone reacts to music differently. Accept the differences and learn to have a good time no matter what music you're listening to.
Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
tbf I think this whole rnb-meets-Ibiza David Guetta shit is godawful but is it really worse than all the landfill indie a few years back?
Re: How did "Pop" basically become Electro House/Trance
Pop music is always an appropriation of something that's popular in the mainstream at the time. So for it to latch on EDM makes sense, but I'm surprised that electro house is STILL popular in the mainstream (especially cuz it's started to sound like trance) and why it took America so long to follow Europe on this (which is odd too cuz America was waay too stubborn about its music in the past)? That Calvin Harris/Rihanna tune totally sounds like the typical music you hear in European clubs since at least 2004. Like it was specifically written for a big pop festival.
By now, you'd think all mainstream pop would start to sound like a really lame appropriation of FlyLo, Machinedrum, HudMo or even Burial.

This. Most people put in zero time whatsoever finding new music, and when they do here something just a little left field, they think it's just the most shockingly weird music they've ever heard.hugh wrote:I would say a good 50% of people don't really have any taste in music and have never made an effort to expand on their musical tastes beyond what is fed to them by Radio 1.
