Re: Lucid Dreaming
I've been practicing lucid dreaming 4 years now, get them every once in a while from doing reality checks in dreams (Pinch my nose, can still breath through it = dreaming

Re: Lucid Dreaming
Are you having dreams in which you are consciously aware of doing so or you just having nice dreams? How did your lucidity affect DEP's break-up?Genevieve wrote:I've always wanted to lucid dream, was pretty fascinated by it........ until I figured I was doing it for years. All dreams that I remember are lucid dreams. This morning I was in a threesome, invented a new game and the Dillinger Escape Plan broke up and started a bunch of new projects.
You mean you were actually awake in the real world and were dipping in and out of rem sleep/ the dream? Or were you just hallucinatingDub_freak wrote:Think i did it this morning, i woke up and my dream carried on while i knew i was awake.
I think they're might be a bit of confusion over what lucid dreaming actually is, so instead of me doing a bad job at explaining, i'll hand it over to my friend wikipedia:
So when one becomes aware within the dream (or uses the wake-Initiated method, where you enter straight from a wakened state and experience sleep paralysis and all that crazy aural hallucination stuff (most people have had this once in their life by accident i think)) you can interact with the dream-world to some extent and make conscious decisions like you would in the waking world.A lucid dream is any dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming. The term was coined by the Dutch psychiatrist and writer Frederik (Willem) van Eeden (1860–1932).[1] In a lucid dream, the dreamer may be able to exert some degree of control over their participation within the dream or be able to manipulate their imaginary experiences in the dream environment.[2] Lucid dreams can be realistic and vivid.[3] It is shown that there are higher amounts of beta-1 frequency band (13–19 Hz) experienced by lucid dreamers, hence there is an increased amount of activity in the parietal lobes making lucid dreaming a conscious process.[4]
The most common and easy techniques to initiate lucidity, and the ones i personally use, are:
1. Reality checks - throughout the day do a number of checks whenever you remember or something seems off - pinch you arm and see if you can feel, count the number of fingers you have, check to see if switches work as expected, re-read text or time twice and see if it changes, hold your nose and see if you can breathe, look at yourself in a mirror and to see if looks different... there are loads of methods. Just question if you're dreaming as often as possible. The reasoning is that if you do this enough in the waking world it will become embedded in your conscience and you will do it in the dream too. I can vouch for this.
2. Mantra before sleep - Repeat a mantra such as "1... I am dreaming... 2... I am dreaming" etc. and the thought is that if you have these thoughts embedded in your conscience while attempting to sleep, they will resonate in your dream and encourage you to be more vigilant.
3. Keep a dream journal - This is probably the most difficult one because if you've just woken up and know you need to get back to sleep then stopping to write down what you remember can really fuck up your chances of getting back to sleep, plus it can seem like a lot of effort. This requires discipline, but if you've got this down you can expect to remember most of your dreams and attain really vivid dreams. At the peak when i was doing this, i remembered at least 3 dreams per night and very well. You get into a habit of waking up after every dream which isn't a pain when you get used to it, and also helps because you will wake in REM and hopefully go back into REM sooner after you sleep.
Those are very basic but i thought i would outline them for people interested in getting started. Hopefully d-t-r, alphacat, mks and ottomatik can fill us in with more advanced techniques because i'm still essentially a n00b

Yeah i was awake in the real world and dipped in and out of the dream, will do some research later on because this has got me interested.idontreallygiveashit wrote:You mean you were actually awake in the real world and were dipping in and out of rem sleep/ the dream?Dub_freak wrote:Think i did it this morning, i woke up and my dream carried on while i knew i was awake.
Thanks for the tips.

Re: Lucid Dreaming
Conscious dreams basically. I can totally plan them out and decide what happens next. But because I'm really fucking impulsive, I sometimes do things I don't want my dreams to do so I just rewind and do it differently.idontreallygiveashit wrote:Are you having dreams in which you are consciously aware of doing so or you just having nice dreams? Re: Lucid Dreaming
I have a handful of recurring dreams that always play out in the same manner. Recently, I can sometimes recognize that I am having one of these recurring dreams. It will be like, an event is happening from one of my recurring dreams and I will think "not this dream again, I know what will happen if I let this play out", so I will consciously decide not to go down the same 'dream path' that normally happens. Normally what will happen is that I will decide not to do something that I know will lead me to the familiar outcome. I usually lose control over it at that point, but it's an interesting feeling to know that I'm having a dream, and I know that I can manipulate it to a small degree.A lucid dream is any dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming. Re: Lucid Dreaming
have narcolepsy/cataplexy so lucid dreaming is standard though not as cool as some seem to feel it is. I find when I lucid dream I get about zero benefit sleep wise from it and wake up exhausted. Given the nature of narcolepsy you value your deep sleep and lucid dreaming seems to mean your brain is more active and therefor not in that lush deep state.

Re: Lucid Dreaming
as an insomniac my experience with lucid dreaming is not much to tell. in my younger days i had a few semi-lucid dreams, and my last attempt ended in a night terror and waking paralysis for about five minutes. it scared me into losing sleep for a few days and made my insomnia much worse. hats off to those who are able to control their own dreams, what escapism!

Re: Lucid Dreaming
I've had a couple, never with any "aide" although I do take 5-tp and melatonin at least once a week as a sleep aide.
Strange thing though. I read this thread then went on a business trip Monday night. So I'm sharing a hotel room with this colleague who snores like a buzzsaw and I had a couple beer which only put me on edge and made it harder to sleep. So I somehow fell directly into a lucid dream while at the same time being completely aware of my waking surroundings. I've never had this happen before and it was definitely not imagination it was a dream where I immediately realized I was dreaming and took over.
A weird part of this was my first instinct when I realized I was dreaming was to bring in a bunch of fine bitches to orgy as I sometimes do while lucid dreaming. However I reasoned I shouldn't do this because of my colleague in the other bed. Somehow I was aware of both realities but not that they weren't connected. Like I said I've never had this awareness before and all the lucid dreams I've had in the past have been toward the end of my sleep cycle on the way out.
So I initiated something I call the kaleidoscopic elevator until I was overwhelmed and woke up.
This kaleidoscopic elevator is similar to the way a friend of a friend of mine told me he feels when he smokes dmt but not enough to break through.

^ maybe it was one of these?
Re: Lucid Dreaming
Another little tip is to purposely wake yourself up at around 4 - 5 am then back to sleep. (guess it depends how soon you start dreaming each night as it varies for most people )Also try and pro-long your sleep after you feel awake..
an actual fixed sleeping plan is always useful. recommended if your life allows for it.
also a Reminder that what you put in and get our of your day time will reflect in what you get out of night.
Reality checks are useful, but language and intent plays a big role in the way we see things. Rather than checking reality, ensuring you are lucid in the day is what really helps.
Get used to paying attention to details, textures etc
If you're getting in to Lucid dreaming, Tell yourself you're also getting in to Lucid Living. The more lucidity you cultivate in the day time, the more you'll get out of night.
A lot of us think we're lucid but most of the time our mind is pre-occupied with thought/feeling.
Learning to be an impartial observer , to the world and to yourself is where the worth-while challenge is. Becoming aware of how your inner dialouge crafts your perception not only in the dream world but also in day to day life. Become aware of the thinker doing the thinking etc
Also, the more you pursue this kind of thing, and conciousness in general, the more often you'll get weirded the fuck out by a lot of what you learn...after a while things don't seem as strange..well actually they do, but there is less hesitance to get more involved with yourself and the world. Make it fun and let your reward receptors know they are in for unimaginable treats

Re: Lucid Dreaming
why do they describe 'dimensions' like string theory??
Re: Lucid Dreaming
something I enjoy is waking from a dream, and falling back to sleep thinkg hard about the dream I was having, then I can continue the dream I was having, even if ive been to the toilet or whatever in between dreams... Then usually I can control what happens in the second dream.
Re: Lucid Dreaming
D-T-R, that was amazing. I have a hard time pulling it off cause i drink and smoke alot. Hope to overcome that soon because this is my number one interest atm besides music.

Re: Lucid Dreaming
I had a lucid last night, and i'm not really sure what happened.
Normal dream, clocked something was odd, got a family member to tell me i was dreaming, to confirm this i slapped them in the face as hard as i could (hehe) and concluded i was dreaming, thought "okay cool", starting to float out of my front door but this person had grabbed onto my leg and was weighing me down. I kicked them off and as soon as i did i jolted out of bed.
Looked around confused, my arm was completely numb. My fan was on (i have it on most nights next to my bed) and so i turned it off. Went back to bed - slipped back into the same dream but wasn't lucid anymore.
Woke up again and my fan was running again. "Eh?" i thought, turned the fan off, but there was still a stream of air coming from somewhere - another fan appeared at the bottom of my bed and i turned it off, which turned the other one on and vice versa. Concluded that this time and the time before were false awakenings, so i'm still in the second layer of my dream. Could feel my waking-world body in sleep paralysis and started to panic, couldn't get out of the dream. That drowning sensation you get sometimes took over my body and my vision started to turn to static. Woke up into the real world confused. My arm was completely numb from the fan by my bed.
