Get a pair of derbys. Loads of goods ones out there but sanders, trickers, buttero, common projects, moma all make good ones that aren't too "old man"-ish.

Boat shoes are the most horrible footwear there is, besides everest trek sneaker/boots and crocs. Prep style looks goofy as fuck, no matter what GQ has told you.
Loafers can be ok if styled right, but that demands a lot from the wearer. If you got the steez and look baller, sure, otherwise they look like tiny old man slippers.

I think we'll leave the discussion about if they look here. You're not gonna change your mind nor am I.

However, boat shoes are not dressy. They're casual shoes which some people mistake for being dressy solely for the fact that they're not sneakers. You wouldn't wear brown boat shoes in a strict office setting, say finance, would you? Oxfords, you would. Same thing goes for all places that require dressy clothes.
