DAW choice, from FL
So I come from using FL studio as a DAW that gave me a new means to create music, since I also have played a variety of instruments from guitars, drums, piano I just love creating music in general... now I have been experimenting with massive, fm8 and a few other good vst's to create some pretty nice beats.... but I want to expand my horizon to the fullest and I want a DAW that will do just that. I'm interested in making some D&B, dub step, house and the computer I used before didn't have the specs for taking on music production really so I went out to an apple store and got myself a macbook pro. I need a new DAW to learn that will also be able to load vst's ect... now I'v been looking into ableton live... but I also know theres others like logic and reason..... I just almost don't know where to start, I feel like I'm starting over from scratch. Opinions please, haha I don't know what to choose
any help with me deciding where to go with it would be nice.
thanks guys

Re: DAW choice, from FL
FL is the shit IMO, a truly great DAW, but since you have a mac now, I dont think you can get it, Im not sure.
Anyways, download demos of Logic, ableton etc and find out which of the DAWs have a workflow that you enjoy, and that you feel creative with.
When you've tried different DAWs, buy the one that you felt was the best for you. What DAW is best is subjective, as almost any DAW can do what the other can, it's all about the workflow now.
Hope that made sense, haha

I recommend Ableton, although it isn't the best with CPU. I'm also working on NI maschine and like that too, although there are no instrument racks like ableton.

Yeah you can do all the same stuff in ableton and logic, maybe more. I haven't used logic but the workflow in ableton is way better than FL for me.Onyxcloud wrote:Yeah, I really did like fl studio..... but are the possibilities the same as ableton or logic? or whatever good daw's are out there?

Re: DAW choice, from FL
Ableton is probably the most versatile Daw, you can do so much with it.
Re: DAW choice, from FL
You can do everything in FL that you can in ableton or logic, so that shouldnt be something to worry about. Like I said, it's about what workflow fits you best.Onyxcloud wrote:Yeah, I really did like fl studio..... but are the possibilities the same as ableton or logic? or whatever good daw's are out there?

Re: DAW choice, from FL
i was in the same boat as you, got logic and never looked back.. the workflow is much better in my opinion.
the change from FL to Logic was STRESSFUL at first but once you get the hang of it you'll be fine.
whenever i go back to fruity i hate it now

Re: DAW choice, from FL
Fl studio is amazing and some of its features are priceless...
I use logic for the most part, but use FL for the Fruity granulizer and the step sequencer to get hi hat grooves going.
Its all about using what gets the job done.
Ableton have a 30 day trial, but i don't think Logic has a demo so i recommend watching lots of tutorials on youtube to see if it looks like something you could use...

Logic's awesome. Bit of a move from FL (I done the same) but once you get the hang of it you'll love it.
Re: DAW choice, from FL
FL is on Mac in 2 ways: through Bootcamp/Windows and a native version that runs without Windows that is currently in advanced beta stages. You can get one of those.
Re: DAW choice, from FL
LOGIC is amazing and very powerful , will take some getting used to, i watched a ton of tutorials on youtube first
Re: DAW choice, from FL
You definitely need to get another daw (or two) before you'll ever be able to produce anything of any value. FL will completely and totally limit your ability to produce even the most rudimentary music. At a minimum you are going to need ableton live and logic, but picking up cubase might also be necessary depending on your abilities.

Dead serious mate. 2 top shelf daws MINIMUM. No worthwhile tunes (let alone genres) have EVER been made in FL.

Fuck logic, it can't work with loops! (Yeah, accept for that fucking stupid apple loops feature)
Logic is really unlogic, if they aren't going to change their way of thinking fast, they will lose so many more people to ableton. (Oh yes, they did!)
At the moment Ableton really is the best DAW if you want to make electronic music (not saying it's better for other shit, I do my recordings and stuff in logic)
But fuck, I think everybody has to try ableton sometime... It really will change your way of making music in a good way!
Any flylo fans out here?

Not gonna say other DAW's are bad (except for reason). You can do very good things with them, but shit... TRY ABLETON
I hope I pissed some people off!!!

what?
I switched from FL to Logic. The transition took a bit and I changed up my workflow a bit (a lot more audio than MIDI now), but I haven't looked back. try some demo's and see what fits you

Should probably look at getting Nuendo to use as a host for Audacity for it's stability.nowaysj wrote:You definitely need to get another daw (or two) before you'll ever be able to produce anything of any value.
