Is there a vst to slow down audio in real time?

Post by Artie_Fufkin » Sat Oct 13, 2012 12:05 pm

I'm thinking along the lines of how dblue's stretch vst works. It uses a buffer to do granular resynthesis in real time being fed.
Is there a vst like this but with the ability to simply slow down the audio?

Hi, if you are using Ableton, and most DAWs you could automate the tempo for just that section of the track, could give you the desired results.
Although i would recommend you time stretch in something like sound forge and import if you just want to slow it down, especially if you want it to fit to a beat easily using the bpm timings ;-)

Why not just use that plugin? What would you want one to do differently exactly? Depending on your DAW/CPU you can automate timestretching too. Or maybe a granular sampler, tapestop, pitchwheel...

I'm talking about playing the audio at half speed(or whichever speed) as it's being fed in realtime, not timestretching or any algorithmic stuff. Tape stop is pretty close, however I would want it to be constant. You also have engage and disengage the effect for it to work. The main use I would get out of it would be to be able to mess around with sounds at slower speeds without having to resample. I would be able to move the "slow" plugin around in my effect chain and see how it sounds at each stage without having to bounce samples and then play the sound into the rest of the chain at a lower note(preferably one octave lower for convenience).

Sounds like you want scrubbing. The scrub tool is essential for me, it's basically an emulation of tape speed when editing/recording to tape that allows you to slow down or speed up playback based on how fast you move your mouse or a knob/fader which is essential for video editing type stuff. I scrub in Sound Forge when editing sounds, but Cubase does it well too and FL has a scrub tool as well but it's not very good. I see you're a Renoise user, I dunno if it has a scrub tool. Alternatively you might want to try a DJ plugin that simulates vinyl/scratching. One that comes to mind is an old one called Turntablist but it probably isn't the best option since you have to load the samples into it.

I had a bit of fun with turntablist. However, it wasn't what I was looking for. I haven't heard of a scrub tool in renoise. How do you access it in FL? There's like a master pitch slider. Is that what you're talking about?

In FL, if you go into the piano roll there is an icon near the pencil/brush tool called Playback which is basically scrubbing. I'm not sure if it's available on audio clips, though it should be... probably in Edison. That's the only things I know of that sound somewhat similar to what you mean though. There's a few other plugins like Turntablist, might want to search around for more. Actually if you have FL too, might want to check out the Wave Traveller as it can do similar stuff.
Playback/Scrub tool - () enables you to preview the current sequence by dragging horizontally in the Piano roll (thus enabling you to define the playback speed and order). Alternatively, hold ( Alt) + Right-Mouse button while in draw mode.

FL Studios gross beat can do this, but only over a certain number of beats, then it'll reset and start playing the sound from the point the original audio is at but at a slower speed again. It should work for what you described though, previewing the effect chain and then if you like the sound you can bounce it.
