Settle down. I'm pretty sure you can't achieve what he does just by sampling skrillex. There would have to be some kind of actual synthesis going on, or maybe I'm wrong. Plus, I'm not saying that the end jusifies the means but his music is still awesome. The end of gorilla march pretty much shows you that he's just as good at composing as Skrill. Anyway let's not make this thread a Zomboy vs Skrillex debate, Zomboy already has enough fans trying to justify what he does andI'd rather not go any further into it.ehbrums1 wrote:no you fuckwad his growls sound like skrillexs because they are skrillys.....

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
skrillex didnt make the SMANS growl
his stuff sounds comparatively amateur (but much better imo) since he's dropped off mau5trap, so it probably was one of them. or they hired hollywood sound designers for it (which wouldnt be a bad thing imo, i'd totally do it)
anyway, he didnt make it. and the scatta growl is indeed way better.

Nah, that's conspiracy theory bollocks. If that was the case then when he had his laptop stolen he could have just gone back to the original sound designer and got the patch back. Instead, since then it's gone.hasezwei wrote:skrillex didnt make the SMANS growl

It's much more likely that it was a patch he stumbled across by accident or by endless tweaking which he is unable to replicate.

So because he moved on from Mau5trap and evolved his sound, someone was ghostwriting for him?hasezwei wrote:skrillex didnt make the SMANS growl

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
I love all this shit that gets thrown around... he spent time with Noisia whilst making that EP which clearly influenced his basses. He spent like 6 months making the EP from his previous one, and 2 of the tracks were basically remakes of tracks from the previous EP; so god knows how much time he dedicated to actually making the brand new tracks including SMANS (according to 12th Planet he worked basically 9-5 on production a lot of the time).
The fact is he spent a lot of time on each track, he is a musician so melodies probably weren't hard to write, whilst making them learnt stuff from Noisia, probably had help from deadmau5 with regards to synthesis/mixing and had the EP mastered professionally. None of his "post stolen laptop and hard drives" tracks (except for leaked/unreleased demos that were released after but made before) have similar growls because he probably thought "fuck it I spent X amount of time making all those tracks and basses, I'm going to start fresh". I know I would, why would you try and remake old tracks... he's evolved his sound the way he wants to, instead of making similar tracks over and over; whether it's for the better or worse is up to you.
Why the fuck would mau5trap hire "hollywood sound designers" to make dubstep basses? You can hear similar ideas in his pre-mau5trap releases, it's just so much more raw, distorted and unrestrained.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Pretty sure tracks like died this way and San deigo have similar growls to his earlier ones. And let's not forget equinox. They're not really that hard to achieve in FM8, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the SM&NS monster bass was FM8 layered with massive. Some of the growls I've been getting out of FM8 are pretty similar to Skrillex stuff, keen to see how they turn out once I process them a little more.

What you fail to realize is the fact that there is not an evolution on there, it's the same formula, executed in less quality, with dull sounds instead of awesome complex ones. Compare the growl in SMANS to the growl in 'Breaking a Sweat' for the most obvious example. Anyone that has spent a bit in Massive would know how to replicate that growl in no time. Then again, even if you are really good at FM8 (or Massive) or your favourite synth of choice, you'll fail to replicate a growl like the one heard in SMANS. Proof: Every single video in Youtube, where the guy pretends that by using WOW Filter, Talkbox or just moving a the notches on EQ8 on top of a really dull FM8 patch with distortion on top will create the results heard in SMANS. No one can replicate that sound ever again, not even Skrillex himself.
His sounds have gotten simple, dull and uninteresting by the release, this is a fact. What keeps getting better is the overall production mix/mastering (for obvious reasons, he has now enough power to contact anyone he wants to, to if not do all the mixing work for him, at least give them lessons and teach him a lot of stuff that it would take ages to figure it out yourself by reading equally unexperienced people over the internet).
Bottomline is: His sounds were great in SMANS and he has been at the decline since then. His latest releases, and everyone else on the genre, sound really dull compared that EP.
