Cassette Releases

Post by garethom » Thu Oct 25, 2012 2:52 pm

'llow the hipster talk straight off.

As discussed in one of the review forum's threads, heads need, no, DEMAND a thread about cassette releases, because they aren't the easiest things to find, and also, releases on cassette tend to be cassette only.

Anyone know of any places selling cassettes, or labels putting them out on the regs?

Few suggestions straight off the bat...

The Trilogy Tapes - Picked up the Madteo one off there the other day
No-Corner - Cassette only label, put out releases by JABU and Kahn & Neek, so far.
Black Hymn Records - Got sent their first cassette release recently, ambient biz. Not sure if they're gonna put out some more.
The Tapeworm - Bagged the Old Apparatus cassette fairly recently.

Yes mate!

ok, Leaving Records (Matthewdavid's LA label) puts out stuff on cassette, their latest release was the new Ras G joint. (Scratch that, just seen they've put out a Knxwledge which I slept on and it's already sold out :( ).

The first SonicRouter release (Torus EP) was on cassette and came with stickers :D

Other than the, I've got the Semya - Golden Days EP next to me, and some welsh prog rock from The Institute which didn't even come with a label on the cassette

Big fucking fan of cassette, using it a lot as both a listening and recording medium. Have got a thread going in Production which has a lot of cassette love and information in it :D

Also checking Strictly Casssette on the regular for hip-hop related stuff.

Big up Wub, will check some of those out!

For what it's worth, I found a few by searching for "Cassette" on Bandcamp, hardly any electronic stuff, and a lot of stuff that isn't on cassette at all though.

I see more releases getting a cassette release again actually. I think some major metal bands are releasing their new shit on cassette too.

Why is the format seeing such a resurgence? Really don't the sudden interest.

My favourite by far is

http://hansonrecords.net/

Full of dark grimey ambient synth stuff, noise etc. I recommend the envenomist tape so much if you like insanely dark synth stuff. TREPANERINGSRITUALEN is some good industrial stuff too.

Not only is this also one of my favourite labels but they sell so much other good stuff from other labels too plus Aaron is sound as fuck.

I wouldn't have known it if I wasn't looking for Night Tracks, but people are trying to get rid of these things in huge numbers, so, per unit, they're really fucking cheap. Not sure if that's why? Some hipster elements no doubt.

Same thing with vinyl; people like the warmth, or they're just too hip and want something different.

If you didn't really grow up on cassettes, it probably just wont make sense. Big ups the original, portable format :4:

Big up those that used to rinse the 49p cassette sales in ASDA with their mom and dad.

Remember caning some mainstream garage comp from probs 99/00? Some double pack, had a red/burgundy cover, distinctly remember that Buddy X track with Neneh Cherry being on it, what a banger.

Bomfunk MCs - Freestyler was pretty much worn out.

They're cheap to make and they having a certain sonic quality. They really suit extreme and black metal, dark ambient, noise, power electronics and Hip Hop I find.

it does seem like nowadays you can make any old shit, bung it on a cassette and people will lap it up. having said that, the cream rises to the top. I think it depends on how you present and use the format. if your whole schtick is that it's a tape release then, more often than not, it just comes off as a cheap gimmick.

tape's got a great feel to it. sonically and aesthetically it's quite refreshing.

I'd be interested to see if any other defunct formats resurface. I know of some people working with vhs tapes. would be interesting to see a minidisc label (lol).
