DJ Blakey

Blakey is a DJ whose career has served him well. Which was confirmed in 2004 when at just 19 years old he was crowned DMC Champion, awarding him for a skill he began to hone at age 14. With weekly trips to Slammin' Vinyl records to pick up the latest garage release he had hours of music to mix which were used with long time friend, Basher (RAM Records) for their own pirate radio station in their home town of Twickenham created to give themselves an outlet.

Although known for playing around with a range of styles, Blakey’s mastery lies in a house and garage set with a subtle nod to classic hip-hop. A sound he spent three years distributing via BBC, where he was at the helm of BBC 1 Xtra’s airwaves presenting hip-hop show, ‘The Definition’, which also led to him featuring on Radio 1 with ‘1Xtra Presents’.

Blakey had a four year love affair with Fabric as resident for their Fabric Live Friday promotion. With reputable brands like Urban Nerds following suit and opportunities such as supporting NAS falling into his lap. Over the years his DJ skills have taken him to every corner of the globe including Asia, India, Europe, Australia, USA and Africa.

He was later employed by FreeStyleGames, a subsidiary of Activision (Call Of Duty, Guitar Hero) to assist them in the making of DJ Hero. Blakey became the Scratch DJ and creative consultant for the game in a 9-to-5 job that lasted four years, taking him around Europe, and to as far as Australia, Asia and USA to promote the game with his turntable prowess.

Going back to his roots, Blakey's overdue first release is a Garage double A side. ‘If You See Me b/w Back Then’ will be released on Slime Records this coming summer 2012.

And now, we've gone and added a dope as fuck DJ competition. More info below...

Up n coming DJs! Fed up of shitty ‘vote for me’ popularity contests masquerading as DJ competitions? Fed up of seeing brown nosing wasters clang their way to victory in so many other comps? If so, Below The Belt has the solution. A blind mix competition, purely judged on DJ skills. How can you be sure it’s unbiased? Simple. DJs enter by turning up to our event on Friday 16th November @ H Bar, Hove with a mix, with NO DETAILS ON IT, BAR A CONTACT PHONE NUMBER (in capitals, because so many people overlook it), and put it in the “Mix Box” on the bar downstairs. This way, mixes are anonymous, and the best DJ is the winner. Yes, it’s that simple.

RULES:

1. The styles that we are looking for are – Garage (old and new), dubstep (all styles), UK bass, grime, drum n bass (all styles), house (all styles), breaks, Detroit techno, electro, UK funky, bashment, moombahton, juke/footwork, trap, hip hop, and anything inbetween. No psy trance. This ain’t a dogs on strings ting.

2. Entries must only have a contact phone number on them, nothing else. Entries with any additional info on will not be listened to so as to eliminate any possible bias.

3. The mix must be 30 minutes or more.

4. Ableton DJs welcome, so long as you’re doing next level shit. Doing a line of ket off your laptop before putting on a pre-synced tech house mix is not our definition of next level shit.

5. Judges will be the Below The Belt team.

6. The judges’ decision is final!

PRIZE:
The winner will win a paid set at the next Below The Belt event (which will be under a new name), and your mix will be passed on to our Brighton and Hove promoter friends, gaining you other potential slots. Which ones will vary depending on who wins/what style they play. You will also win +2 on the guestlist at the night you’re playing at, and a £50 bar tab. Y’know, cos we’re nice like that.

Free entry spots have run out, but it's still only £3 before 11. One of the UK's all time great turntablists for the price of a pint? Rude not to, innit.. :P
