Stereo amp recommendations

Post by Geey » Fri Oct 26, 2012 10:08 pm

I have a turntable set up at home and my stereo amp has finally had it.
I've had it for about 12 years and it wasn't new when I got it, it was just given to me from a cousin when I first got decks for something to run them on.
I don't have a clue what wattage that amp was and I have zero knowledge about amps and don't know what watt amp I should be looking for just for bedroom djing use?
I obviously want a nice sound but don't wanna spend loads on something that won't use it's full potential

Any help would be grateful

Depends on a lot of factors, you want it for DJing so monitoring i.e. clean sound then yeah? Solid state (SS) amps probably you`re best bet for cost, portability and general clarity; electron valves are generally for making stuff sound really good but maybe not 100% accurate (part of the attraction is their amazing subtle distortion which SS has nothing on).

Wattage is here nor there depending on what your speakers are rated at! Also, if you get a SS amp you can get an amp that`s x10 more powerful than the max rating of the speakers then never raise the volume above `1` so you can get the best clarity. Best not to overdrive SS amps because they sound shit so that`s a pretty good tactic as long your careful, or you put a limiter on the signal. You also want one that sounds good which might not be related to its wattage...

You also need an amp that will match the impedance (ohm/Ω) of your speakers and the wattage rating will change depending on this, it`s damn important to get that right or you`ll blow one of the two up. The best bet is to check where you plug the power amp cable in to the speakers to see what it says near the jack socket or in the manual but otherwise you can test it yourself with a decent electrical multimeter. Other useful tricks are to bridge a stereo amp to double it`s wattage and half it`s impedance but you need two identical stereo amps to supply a stereo set of speakers and then they have different volume controls so need a bit extra initial tweaking (though some hifi heads deliberately put separate controls on for better balancing) - but here`s a warning: can be fucked up easily if you do one thing wrong!

The power needed also depends on your speaker`s sensivity but if you have proper monitors they should have something like 90db/watt or something like if I remember correctly, anything less is more for deliberately overdriving

everything test recordings said.

also, if you are looking for brands, check out NAD, either new or older models via ebay. Some of their integrated amps are pretty much the nicest sound for bass-centric music you are gonna get for sub-400 quid. Seriously warm, punchy, weighty sounds, highly recommended

Also, if you want to get super-pro then buy a crossover and amp your bass separate from the mid/tops, way better quality and efficiency that way. Unfortunately it takes a lot of skill to work out how to balance the input power depending on the frequency and dB/octave level of the crossover as well as considering the frequency reproduction of the speakers.

yeah i done this - it is pretty long....
got a Tag Mclaren 60i on the mids/ hi's then a matching power amp (tag 60p) on the bass. Worth it in the end though (I think/ hope!)
