Hi.
I have used nexus in the past and found the sounds to be incredible. They sound near perfect straight out the box... However this is my issue..
I have studied music technology and at my university they stressed the point of understanding synthesis... which i do, but i Nexus holds a sound that i feel that most synths cant recreate. This is obviously due to the fact that it is a sample based synth (Rompler?).
Anyways, i am seriously considering getting this regardless because sometimes in a session i sometimes just need that instant sound to provide a layer or to achieve a specific sound.. My problem is that i feel like i am cheating lol.
However i have sat and pondered (perhaps for too long) about this and i realised... i guitarist spends "X" amount of money on a guitar because of the sound that it produces, then uses several effects etc to customise its sound... and why can't this be the same for Nexus? I mean... in music production and composition there are a lot of "music snobs" sat on there big golden high horse throwing accusations and insults at other musicians.. whether it be for using presets or mimicking another artists sound. But, we lose sight of the fact that musics primary purpose is for entertainment, and a lot of people over think the whole art/tech side. If you want to make unique custom synth sounds then just build your own soft synth lol.
But anyway, i am just wondering what peoples views are on this? do you use it or do you know anyone that does? If you dont use it what are your reasons? Is it one of those "Frowned Upon" instruments now that these "pioneers" (yes, i use the term lightly) of electronic music see as a beginners tool or whatever?
Thanks for reading

Re: ReFX Nexus 2.... I have a mental block
Imo it's very much made for preset junkies and not sound design.
Which means unless you download the banks, you'll find it to be limited as it has no Synthesis engine.
You'd be better off going for something Like Spectrasonics Omnisphere if you want a kick-ass rompler with a built in synthesis engine that expands the library into an unlimited source for synthesis.

Nothing wrong with using Nexus. Great for adding a quick pad or lead synth though I can't see myself ever using it for basses as I prefer to make those myself from scratch. It comes down to how you personally feel about it really. Out of all those presets you will probably only find a handful you will actually use which limits your options. I agree with Electric, in the long run a synth with presets where you can actually make your own sounds from scratch also is more useful unless you want to keep paying...

Nexus looks okay to me, but I've been lusting after Omnisphere for ages.

There is no cheating if you are a musician and or producer. It is cheating if you are a supposed sound designer. It is just an instrument to play, like a guitar.
