Make sure you still eat enough vegetables (fresh or canned). Fruit sucks.
Yeah I live beside a Lidl who keep their bins locked in doors the greedy animals. Otherwise I would definitely rob the bins and eat for free lol.
The dahl sounds tasty but them spices will cost a fortune.

I used to live next to Lidl. Bins were open until some wanker decided to burn one, bye bye free melons.
Do you have a local ethnic shop? The spices are dirty cheap in here, like 40p for a bag that will last you for a year.

Aha yes I will take a trip to some of the Ethnic shops near me. I would have never thought to do that!
knell wrote:are potatoes as cheap in northern ireland as they are in most places? is that a dumb question? down in southern california you can get 5kg for a dollar at some groceries.
aww gnome i wish you were closer to here, i was actually wishing that i had someone to cook for last night.

Oh jesus aye you can buy loads of potatoes for dirt cheap around here lol. They say the price will go up soon because of the wet summer. But I can't see it if they can grow 15,200 pounds per acre of land

Saw a programme where supermarkets were chucking away tons of food in to their biffa bins out the back and some top chef just went round the back and took it all out and made a meal for charity for celebs and everyone lived happily ever after.
Could try this but miss out the celeb bit.
Or failing that, when I'm skint, I just buy a massive cheap bag of porridge for about a pound, that will last you for a couple of weeks for breakfast, its nutrious and fills you up for a long time due to being a slow releasing carb.
The trick is to buy in bulk and freeze to save money.
Buy cheap mince in massive packs, my tesco are doing mince on half price for a 400g pack which is costing £2.20 a cheap jar of tesco chillin con carni sauce costs about 80p some chillis if you like it hot costs about 30p (also hides that cheap sauce taste) and a big bag of rice costs about £1. You would get 4 servings out that chilli and just freeze them in sepaerate containers. It's not quite 50p a day but gives you a good meal for very cheap.
Or like a said buy cheap porridge and live off that all day.

Agree on lentils and brown rice. Basic spices for a dal for me would be cumin, chilli, garlic, ginger and turmeric and should cost not much from an asian food store.
Mujaddara (basically lentils and rice with onions) is surprisingly tasty for next to no money as well.
I find a lot of eating cheaply comes down to figuring out what's cheap where, though - eg quite a lot of vegetables are massively overpriced in supermarkets compared to market stalls / greengrocers. But then tins of tomatoes and stuff are super cheap there.

Yeah that option has been exhausted by the last few years of uni and loans coming in late forcing me to live off my overdraft.

Sadly folks I won't be living in Ireland when studying. I'll be in North england.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll add salt for extra flavour.

Your best bet is probably going Iceland and loading up on frozen veg, frozen fish and curly fries or something. I usually go Iceland and buy a bag of southern fried chicken, 2 bags of curly fries, frozen veg and 3 pizzas. That costs like 8/9 quid and will last you a few weeks.
My mate in first year had a similar problem to you. He ended up buying 100 economy burgers and a loaf of bread everytime he needed it and lived off burger sandwiches.

Your friend is a hero. Did he not end up getting sick eating economy burgers and nothing else?

Lidl is actually pretty good for a regular shop, everything is exactly the same as the stuff you'd get in Tescos just half the price and with funny European names.
I seriously rate Lidl, once you get past the stigma
