Lukid (Luke Blair), like his label boss and sometime production partner Actress, doesn’t limit himself to one style. Instead he prefers to open up the cages and let techno, hip hop, bass and electro crawl all over each other. As methods go it can be messy, but it also throws up some interesting hybrids.

Imagine a mini keyboard on the couch, talking about his feelings…Lukid would be the one sat on the chair, clipboard handy, asking the probing questions. Coaxing the soul out of the machines is the name of this London-based producer’s game, creating hypnotic head-nod soundscapes in the process. Last year saw him drop an LP and an EP on London-based indie label Werk Discs, full of emotive abstract electronic beats, as well as contributing to the We Are… monthly podcasts.

Something is troubling Lukid. Where once the producer specialised in house textures tainted with sadness, now only flecks of melancholia remain. Allowing urban surroundings to filter through his sub-conscious, ‘Lonely At The Top’ is expert aural psycho-geography. A survey of pain and redemption, the album’s cathartic themes are matched to Lukid’s painterly brush strokes and typically beautiful use of layered sound. Ending with the hopeful, glowing house tones of ‘Talk To Strangers’ the revolving themes unpick themselves slowly, leaving a lasting, lingering effect. A step forward in terms of production and vision, but no doubt at quite a personal cost to Lukid.
