Re: Thread for vinyl rips (if you can prove you own the viny
Serious question, if you have a vinyl release that also got a digital release, why don't you just find a download for it somewhere?
Re: Thread for vinyl rips (if you can prove you own the viny
Seems a bit much to pay for it twice for some people. I have done it, but that's only if I can't find a rip already. Just a time saver really, especially when you've could've paid +£10 for two tracks including delivery.the_disconekt wrote:Serious question, if you have a vinyl release that also got a digital release, why don't you just find a download for it somewhere?

I meant without paying (since you already payed for the physical release)garethom wrote:Seems a bit much to pay for it twice for some people. Re: Thread for vinyl rips (if you can prove you own the viny
Anything that's had a digital release doesn't need a rip, it'll already be floating on the net somewhere. Just do a quick google search and bam you've got your tune - no need to do an actual rip from the record.
edit: I guess morally you can be against this but is it effectively the same thing and much easier/faster.

Re: Thread for vinyl rips (if you can prove you own the viny
sounds like a good idea but i can't see it happening. not coz the mods being dicks but simply because pirating and sharing music is illegal.
but like would be nice to be able to swap music with peps on ere. like i have a list of tunes but can't buy till after xmas so would be sick to be able to get them from some1 else in exchange for some of my bits. maybe even if we could just make a thread for swaping each others mp3s. could use the thread to request and list tunes ya want to swap and arrange the swap outside of the forum?

1. our rules are cut and dry about this. please read them. we also won't get into..." but here's my photo proving i own it..." etc.
2. even if its a sendspace/dropbox link, youtube, vimeo, whatever....we're not going to risk getting a dmca takedown notice over some pissed off label/artist/remixer..what have you. its just not worth the risk. remember that this site has global traffic. any legal ramifications are multiplied several times over when the traffic is global.
3. as with everything on this site, for those that follow guidelines, theres 10x ready to take the piss, and ruin it for the few that won't.

Re: Thread for vinyl rips (if you can prove you own the viny
I know Nevalo likes to give it the big one ITS THE DIGITAL AGE YOU NOOOBZ ETC, but there's more at play than just old people thinking you're stitching them over. At Soul Motive we did the download codes with all our vinyl releases, then we changed it to vinyl purchases only directly from us, to increase traffic through our site, increase sales and total amount of money and traffic coming to the label and the artist. I don't think it worked, but I think it should be up to the label/artist to decide how their music is distributed.
I know Kahn and Neek personally and I know they're vinyl enthusiasts, I'm not sure how they would like it if people were openly distributing digital copies (legit back ups or not) of something that specifically they had chosen to release only on vinyl as part of actively promoting a format they believe in. I wouldn't be happy and I don't think many content creators/distributors would be either.
Perhaps though, arranging it with a buy in from labels and producers? If adequate proof can be provided, then I'm sure many would be happy for such a service to exist. I'm happy to pay (a smaller / nominal fee) for high quality rips, and if some of that were to find it's way back to the artist, that'd be great. though a solid method of providing proof, validation and then distribution with consent is a tangled mess I don't think many will be willing to embark on.

Re: Thread for vinyl rips (if you can prove you own the viny
Their point was that both people should prove they have the vinyl (for a vinyl only release), so that both the sender and receiver can prove they're legit. Nobody ever suggested (at least to my knowledge) that people just send files to people that don't own the physical copy.dubstepper wrote:i think some1 said about if 1 person has it. then some1 else said what if both peps own the vinyl. i duno man i'm just chillin ya know.volcanogeorge wrote:wasn't the point of this thread that people already have the vinyl?dubstepper wrote: so go out and buy vinyl you tight stnuc.

Let me stress, the reason I started this thread was to discuss pros and cons, not to outright say "let's do this". You make only good points here, and I'm sure I mentioned that some artists/labels might not be happy, especially if they're fanatical about vinyl. I completely agree, and I'm probably known for defending vinyl only releases a bit too much, the way I saw it was that I buy the vinyl, I'm probably going to rip it for listening in the car/at work/on the move anyway, so if somebody else had it, that might save a bit of time.pete bubonic wrote:I know Nevalo likes to give it the big one ITS THE DIGITAL AGE YOU NOOOBZ ETC, but there's more at play than just old people thinking you're stitching them over. Your point about buying direct from the label is good, just don't think many label owners will have the time to respond to every request. As I mentioned, I'm a big fan of vinyl, and buy a lot more vinyl than I do digital, but I'm a firm believer in offering a free download for those that purchase the vinyl, especially as it seems vinyl-only is hardly a barrier to rips/leaks appearing on the net.
Some of the points in this thread (and the rules of DSF alone) have made it seem a lot more difficult than it first seemed, so don't sweat it.
