Heh...

Started raving in '92 over here and saw the rise of what many consider to be the golden age of house in America. At the time, it absolutely did fit - there was definitely a function to it (to dance mindlessly, in a good way) and it made the evenings flow.

Also, the city I live in (San Francisco) is one of the American capitols of the sound, so I get exposed to plenty of it. For a minute I was feeling some of the slow house stuff from last year, but... :?

...I always, always get hung up on the static, unchanging beat. Breaks of any sort have always spoken volumes more to me. In fact, from back in those hazy early days the only tunes I consistently remember (besides the standard overplayed Rozalla type shit) are the hardcore tunes and the ones with breaks, the proto jungle tunes.

I like dancing to something with a little more rhythmic variety, that's all. Even reggae - which is also somewhat defined by its limitations - offers more in that department IMO.

----

Also, a lot of this stems from the discovery I made when I first bought a drum machine decades ago that house beats were easier to program than taking a dump.

I think it'll just be a sister label to Swamp, like Deep Medi is to DMZ.
While the "older brother" is only for a very small number of friends to release on, the "younger sister" label can expand to include everyone good enough from around the globe and even have a one-of release from a couple of its artists. my 2 cents. Good luck School :Q:

You talkin' to me? :corntard:

Agreed. Nothing is usually as polarized as gets argued, and apologies now for being too glib for some. In fact, I'd say that the kind of stuff you're describing is my favorite kind of house when I hear it, lately. Stuff that sounds related to a lot of the great swingy/bruk sounds from the last 15 years or so (Bugz, Seiji, etc.) - it gets funkier for me when that happens.

The problem is that the only house you will hear on the radio in SF for the most part is "boof boof boof boof" (or as I call it, OOntss-OOntss-OOntss-OOntss.) The only house you hear in 95% of the clubs... same. The house that gets the most critical love? Totally recidivist piano/diva orgies. Even a lot of the local 'Minimal' house people are really just making stripped down lifestyle accessory music for gay yuppies (yeah, I said it!) and booji white corporate weekend warriors (yeah, I said that too!).

Mind you, this is just a reflection on the state of house where I live, but it just seems to me like the interesting gray sounds are happening everywhere but here, and even then I only get little snippets and tastes of the shit coming out of Berlin, the low countries, the UK, etc. - and tho it's better than the aforementioned lamehouse, there's simply not enough that grabs me. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying the tune has to be all mathed out and sound like digital prog rock or anything. I just need a little more syncopation or something. Again, that's just me.

Also, I totally welcome any mixes or recommendations for interesting "gray" house sounds. 8)

Anything from Aniara Recordings (label). Visionquest (label). Also follow Dixon (dj) sets. So much goodness to be had.

House music is great to dance to, but you're not going to go home after a long night of house music and think, damn, that one tune was amazing, i really want it. It's too mindless and too much of the same thing. It's like trance music; you dont know the big songs, because they're just well produced "trance" songs. The only good house song is a well produced house song.

See - and not to try and start a bigger fight than's already a-brewin' here - most all house is samey and boring by merit of it being house - if it's not a big dumb four on the floor, it's not house. The genre is defined by its limitations. ]
So is dubstep. Probably even more so tbh. And I love both of them.
