The dude's a self-proclaimed illusionist. I'd say it'd be pretty naive to take his programs at face value.
He's very intelligent, no doubt, but he's not god. Surely it'd be highly illegal For Derren Brown to deceive old matey in that way anyway...he supposedly left it two weeks after the audition before making him (unknowingly) the star of the show. sick program, thought it looked real for sure.. the guys face when he realizes whats gone on.. I can imagine myself looking the exact same.. even if it was fake this program left me behind quite shocked and not a lot of tv shows do that so bigup to darren, was very enjoyable

Theres nothing to not believe here lol For years derren has done stuff on the realms of believability, and its always just been a clever mixture of magic, psychology and showmanship etc etc. its the fact that you dont know when hes using different techniques that makes it so mysterious. Alot of his stuff is based on minimal (incredibly perfected) psychological tecniques, but then padded with perfected showmanship to make an entire hour long special look like the washing up in the kitchen in the sword in the stone.

Putting someone to sleep on the bus - handshake induction. Simple as.
Having permission to do this stuff - man signs contract at first interview.
Putting someone to sleep over the phone - couldnt say for sure, but is by far one of the more believable things derren does. Sound is an absurdly powerful tool! Brainwave matching or some shit. Hes been doing that on his shows for years anyway! Why question now? lol

Other than that, everything in the show is exactly what it is. A well organised situation. A couple of moments of putting the guy to sleep, and voila. No idea why anyone would question this episode of any lol

Bang on. It's all in the hypnotism techniques. You have to
understand that the people they pick to do this show are
HIGHLY susceptible types. Idiots for want of a better word.

Hypnotism doesn't work on everybody - esp. the "showman"
stuff you see on stage. If you ever go to a show, you'll see
how they weed out the susceptible from those with "stronger
wills."

Putting people to sleep and then sending them auditory and
visual stimulus cues to re-trigger when "awake" is one of the
many techniques involved in the show. They don't show you
every full hypnotism technique on TV because of Section two
of the OFCOM act. People have been known to become put
in trance through the TV.

Imagine for example that when under, they've told Steven
that when he see's explosions (1) and the colour red on a
girl's sweater (2) and when someone holds his hand in a
particular fashion (3) he is to go back under. They stick him
on a bus in full view of a girl wearing a red sweater, no
problem. He starts experiencing the explosions - that's two
cues - and then the touch - boom - he's back under.
It's not hard.

I guess the OFCOM regulation makes it harder to believe (oh yeah so he can just click his finger? yeah right!?), but conversely if they went into some in depth pseudo-scientific explanation people would still call BS.

The techniques used in the shows are learned over time
and you can go to classes to learn - you have to remember,
Derren has been doing this for over 20 years. He was late 20's
when his first shows went out in 1999/2000ish and he'd been
studying hypnotism and cold reading techniques since he was
at University. He's 40 odd now.

Basic hypnotism is like guided meditation. You get people to
relax in a comfortable fashion and guide them through part-
conscious though processes and you can plant "seeds" that
grow and entice subconscious thoughts to permeate through
(which is the basis for hypnotherapy.)

That's something that can work on the majority of people and
the more and more susceptible you are, the more and more likely
you are to fall into trance like states as opposed to the relaxed
state.

As I said, if you ever go to see a show, you'll notice how the hypnotist
will go through stages in order to weed out those of weaker will.
When they feel they have people that will sufficiently "go under" -
that's when they continue the show, otherwise it won't work.

You can see Derren do this all the time, a good example being the Russian roulette stunt. The doe-eyed kid he ended up using couldn't lie his way out of a wet paper bag! Fair enough if your life's on the line though.
