man, ive been making shit fucking around on fl studio since late 2008. used to play with it for a few hours like once a month. one day i fully made a sick beat and was like "man i should totally work on this" and started from there. man i have like HUNDREDS (probably more like ONE hundred) finished and unfinished projects (a project is never truly done anyway) but only about 20 or so that i reckon have the guts to go somewhere as a tune. the rest are like half done paintings that i can revert to finishing at any time. no matte how shit you think the tune is, SAVE EVERYTHING YOU MAKE. one day youll be like "wheres that chat bassline i made in that tune? it would work perfectly with this!" and if you havent saved it youre toast. haha.
i only had a year long break in prod cos my shithouse old flatmate broke my pc at a party he threw and i couldnt afford a new one for yonks.
man, only recently ive decided to start making bass music and getting experimental and shit. pick an artist you like, and try to emulate some of their sounds. then make your own tune out of thoes sounds. thats what i do. ;)
that and youtube tutorials. cant say enough good shit about youtube tutes.

9 or 10 months, but I used to play in bands and work in a studio before that (nothing to with electronic music, but those years + a few threads in this forum was the best education I could get regarding production).

Most of my songs take about 6-12 hours of time listening, improving, writing new parts, mastering, and so on. These 6-12 hours are usually spread over 2 or 3 weeks of on and off development.

i usually start an idea and come back to it a month or two later. generally takes a few weeks on and off to get it 'finished' then

hip hop beats only take an afternoon tho, don't have to worry about the arrangement as much

been producing for what..... less then a year now? 0 experience with producing music before hand but deep into music for 10 year or so. finishing songs really depends, I mostly got the basics covered in a day or so, but finished.......... pfff I'm never really satisfied with what I come up with so can't say I really 'finished' a song. I do notice that i'm getting faster with the basics.

Haha same here.

But I've been playing drums since high school, taking lessons every week for four years and then decided to pick up a gutsy so taught myself as much as I can about music theory, scales and such. So I've also been hands deep into music for as long as I can remember.

Really? Im no fun to be around hah i just have my head in the screen and tell people to keep it down while i try and make noise lolol!

Let me pose the question, from the point of view of how long it takes everyone to make a tune, what DAWs are you all using? Itd be interesting to see if the people all saying 2-3 days and the people saying 2-3 weeks can be grouped using the same software.. :)

every once in awhile I'm like that too. My roommates been playing Halo 4 since it came out and I've only played a little bit of it so far bc I've been messing with shit.

But I'm using Reason 5, not rewiring it into anything else. I've tried demos and trials of other things but Reason just seems the most natural to me, the sequencer and how the rack is set up and everything.

If you have a mc 303 and if it sends midi out, you already have a beat pad, just need some modding so it detects velocity. I sequence machine through midi notes in my daw. I just love to be able to browse through my library without having to use the computer, being able to tap some beats if I want, assign velocity, shape envelopes and pitch stuff with a few buttons. I don't know, it feels intuitive even though I barely use the internal sequencer.
Oh, and my soft synth of choice is Absynth.

haha bro my soft synths of choice are FM8, Absynth, Poizone, and Massive. (OH and zeta by rcg:audio)
man, the 303 just doesnt read in FL for some reason, need to try harder experimenting with it, but man, so fucking frustrating. maybe i was thinking i could use the midi cable that i have, but when i plug the 303 into my focusrite 2i4, it just doesnt register it.. dont know why. even with piano roll open and everythign linked the same way i normally link everything, it just fucks FL studio around and makes no sounds. i think i need FL 10. im stuck on FL 9XXL cos i like it so much. and even so, it only seems to record in MONO when i can make it record (the mc 303) and since its from the early 90's i have to record it with a microphone. and its fucking impossible to flip the signal to come out the right speaker if its been recorded in left speaker mono. eurgh. any tips? help!! :D

gotta setup the MC as a new instrument in your daw, assign the midi ports.
