haha no man, i was just saying in general. people always try and make things sound better with a ton of fx when it could be done inside the synth

Alright, so I have this new technique I want to try/a new mindset about making growls/other types of midrange. Big Chocolate explained this one
Basically, you start with a really clean sound, maybe a filtered saw wave or whatever, and you keep filtering and filtering. f.ex. He would automate three bandpasses to make some growly motions, and then, when you're happy with the movement in the midrange and stuff, you apply distortion. Very much distortion.

He summed it up as shaping the sound with filters, then making the sound with the distortion, if you know what I mean.
Gonna try this later today, saw him do it, was a pretty dope technique

I was looking at my old soundcloud sounds, and I found this:
Soundcloud

It sounds so fucking great, so fucking wet,
The best thing is I have no idea how I made it lol.

Ok let's be honest the growl above sucks a dick

But today

Ladies and gentleman

I present you

The best growl I've ever made

It's really close to skrillex

Yeah

There is it

Soundcloud

It sounds a lot better on a 320kbps mp3, not on a shitty 128kbps from soundcloud

It's sounds close to skrillex doesn't it?

Oh, and turn up your volume up a little bit, it sounds shitty if you have your volume down lol

Not bad. Doesn't really sound like skrillex yet to my ears though. Could be the lack of song context, I don't know.

P.S. A good idea -- if you're using big decay effects like that -- is to let the growl run to an aux channel where reverb is 100% wet and put a sidechain on using audio from the main. So you don't fuck up your vowel movement and only get the reverb "when you want it".

Another cool thing I recently learned is that you can beef up your growls by layering ex. a sub and put a vocoder on there using the growl as carrier. Your sub will then follow the growl fluently and make it seem more natural.

Not really a growl. Just a metallic bass sound.

It sounds really shrill and piercing. I turned up my volume and it sounded worse.

Well yesterday It sounded nice, but today I realized it sounds like shit, lol.

I obviously hear foley recordings layered in Skrillex' growls, so I made a simple growl in fm8 and tried to layer some foley over it.

This is the growl without anything over it:

Soundcloud

It sounds better I think, lol

Definitely has a mre talky character, gotta be careful the foley stuff doesn't muddy the sound.

Here today I was working on a patch and thought about sharing my steps with you guys. Here is the patch, below is each step taken to get this sound.

Soundcloud

1. One instance of Massive
2. Two instances of Massive layered
3. EQ - Roll of lows, boost mids and highs
4. Multiband Compression
5. EQ automating the vowels
6. WOW filter on bandreject not in vowel mode
7. WOW filter on bandreject again not in vowel mode
8. Camelphat distortion, compression and flanger
9. WOW filter on vowel mode between Ä and U

Uhmmm... I found something interesting, I don't know if you already knew it, but in Skrillex-Disco Rangers Bus, at the minute 3:01 you can hear a synth [like a saw] that makes a vowel effect any idea?

The first one is the disco ranger bus, the second is the needed change by skrillex. I'm just suprised as they use the same talking pattern.
