skimpi wrote:Has anyone here heard of south london ordnance? he makes bass/techno stuff (whatever) but the point is, Im sure he had been producing summat like 9 months before he got his first release or got summat signed for release, and stuff being played by MAH etc. I dunno how long he has been producing now, but its got to be under 2 years, he has something coming on Hotflush, had stuff on Teal, Well Rounded, 2nd Drop, Audio Culture and maybe some more I dunno. So I dont think it really matter how long it 'can' take to be a pro, cos it can happen just like that. Actually I think that Pariah's first release on R&S were his first tunes he made.
There's an interview with him where he discusses this here;

because that is the definition of being a pro(fessional). Being paid for a skill.

Many people confuse 'pro' with being 'good' - as perhaps, did the OP. However, it is a term that is worth using correctly.

The OP didn't confuse being 'pro' with being 'good'. You're confusing the fact that they're almost the same thing. If you're good, someone will sign you, and you will have your music released, and you will make money, obviously.

As with 'long time producers dispelling the myth', honestly, I can say it does truly depend on the person, however, technically, it should take an average of 2 years difference between someone who has a great musical ear against someone average. That being said, I appreciate the insight from the long term producers on here, even though I disagree with most, the grammy winners aren't just pro, they're one of the best. Once again, being 'pro' does not mean you stop improving or learning either.

I gather from this post it'll be three years for me before I cut some paychecks.

WTF is Justin Bieber doing in this thread?????? ugh

You become a pro when producing becomes your profession. :roll:

You are so unbelievably smart. Eye-roll well placed. So much intelligence with that statement, especially since it answers the thread title.

Sorry if I sounded a little rude, mate. But the answer is right there. Basically when you get signed and start making money off of it you can call yourself a pro. ;-)

hahaha yeah that is the most common reply, but it doesn't answer as to how long. I did get some pretty good insight though from the other posts.

Well yeah if you are looking for the amount of time, I usually see most guys getting signed after 4 - 5 years of producing.

The answer is, there is no answer. Every person is different and those differences greatly effect the amount of time it would take. If you have a job, or a family, or anything that requires your time in any way, it will obviously take you longer than someone who can just invest 12-18 hours a day into it. Also besides that, some people are naturally smarter or quicker to digest information than others, and even beyond that you have people who are incredibly gifted in artistic trades that will make beautiful and elaborate pieces of work with little to no background. So your answer is really all on you. It is completely subjective to how committed, able, willing, smart, and naturally gifted you are. Anything past what I just said is complete speculation.

It takes as long as it takes. But who cares, anyway? Professionalism in music or any other art-form is overrated, IMO.
...in my opinion
