(Remix Competition) Jakwob - Blinding (BRAY Remix)

So I've just entered my remix in this Jakwob competition and some of the entries have loads of views, there's a guy called cottonmouth's got 1200 hits.. Anyway if you like the track/have some feedback I'd like to hear it.

Not familiar with the original, but there's quite a few elements in this I like. Your intro is really well constructed, and the mid-range bass at the drop is pretty cool. Your drums do get kinda lost at that point though, I can barely hear your kick between 2:22 and 2:48

Agree with koncide, the drums are quite weak in places and feeling lost behind the midrange.

Thanks for the feedback koncide, wub. I've got a mate who masters tracks (didn't have time to do mine cos I left it a little late..) who mentioned the kick was lacking in sub, so I slapped another eq on and boosted around 50hz, which made the kick a little fuller, and problem solved (so I thought..). Now I've listened back I really see what your both saying, theres quite a bit of sidechaining on the kick, and theres stuff like transient filters on the snare etc, but the drums are totally getting drowned by that mid range bass. I've messed about with layering an extra kick underneath but I found it to be a bit weak, and listening to the drum kit on your track, koncide, you maintain that clarity of the drums thoughout the song, so I can see there's a serious lack of clarity in my drop. Tbh I'm not really to sure how to tackle the problem, do you think its a case of eqing, a bad choice of samples, or possibly adding sidechain compression to that mid range bass? Anyway thanks for the responses, it's much appriciated, and I will try to be a more active user.

It's as much about creating space for the elements within the frequency range as about boosting the elements themselves. If it were me, to get the drums to come through the midrange I'd probably apply some sidechain EQ ducking so that whenever the drum part hits, it triggers the EQ on the midrange to drop out on that specfic frequency range to give it some space.

That's clever, I'm gona give that a go. There are far more frequencies being boosted than lowered, so thats something else for me to think about. I'll post a new version soon, cheers wub

Listened to the new one, I still think it's lacking beat-wise man. Have you tried simply turning the bass fader down, or moving the kick fader up? For all the techniques you can pull out of the hat like EQ and sidechaining, sometimes a simple level adjustment is the best thing to do. If I was you, I'd turn your kick up a good few DB, try to make sure it doesnt upset the mix too much though.

The thing is im using krk rokit 5s, which don't have much bass response. So I was looking at the track with a spectral analyser, and it actually looked pretty pants, so I boosted the bass on a lot of channels and the kits a lot beafer. I've re entered the track in the comp (which ends at some an unspecified time today, I'm assuming midnight) but there should be time to make changes depending on the feedback . Anyway tell me what you think of this:

Get yourself a sub! I have KRK 8s, and even they don't have that much bass response. You NEED a sub or decent headphones if you're goin to make a good low end.

Listened to the update. Levels sound good on my logitech computer speakers. Through my monitor system tho, the kick is audible but lacking in bass. I'd say the mids on your kick are perhaps over dominating, the upper end punch is sufficient but a low end boost might be in order.

To be honest I'd say the only things stopping this tune from really shining through is the kick and snare. Get them to smack as much as possible and you got a killer.

The runners up have been announced already, like 12 hours after the comp closed and I'm not on the list so fingers crossed.. Cheers for the feedback anyway it was spot on.

Try the KRK s series. I have the 12s, good bit of kit. You can really get a feel for the bass.

I've got some nice sennheiser headphone but the jack snapped off and (after over a year..) I still haven't had em repaired. I'm looking at the 10s, they seem ideal. Sticking with KRKs seems like the best thing to do, nice one for the advice. I'll post again if I buy em!
