Re: chillstep
I can't stand when people refer to some legit oldschool dubstep like Skream and call it chillstep.
Even worse when Skrillex released Make It Bun Dem everyone was calling it Reggae-step.
It was one of the most angering things I have read.
I'm cool with calling brostep what it is because that is specifically different than dubstep. But calling real dubstep, chillstep and making up other shit like robotstep just angers me so much.
Its like when people were putting -core at the end of every damn emo band completely forgetting what hardcore really was. (Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc)
It embarrassed me to the point where I couldn't say I like hardcore anymore. Same way I feel about saying I like dubstep. How history repeats itself.
When people say dubstep they mean brostep just like when the emos were calling it hardcore when it was actually melodic metalcore which shared almost nothing with oldschool hardcore punk like The Teen Idles or Judge. At least brostep retains some dubstep elements.
Melodic Metalcore and their shitty "breakdowns" can be compared to brostep's cheesy "drops" where that's all they seem to care about.

Re: chillstep
I agree about the comparison to hardcore. That's all I think about every time I hear a new name for a fusion style of EDM. I think chillstep can just be called dubstep because it's more simliar than brostep and dubstep. There really isn't a need for 100 different sub-genre names, but it's crazy to not care about the music just because of what others label it. Any underground style of music that gets as popular will always influence other sounds and people will always combine names.QuiZNo wrote:I can't stand when people refer to some legit oldschool dubstep like Skream and call it chillstep.

Re: chillstep
When I was doing some work at my local record shop, I got talking to one of the regulars, and he's one of them "Thinks he know what he's talking about, but doesn't" types. He went on calling Burial chillstep and showing me these bare noisy tunes saying they're Dubstep... Cringe worthy.
