Soundcloud/General Help

Post by SPRITE » Wed Dec 05, 2012 11:19 pm

Hey. I have a couple of questions. One, I plan on becoming a DJ, but i just started and I'm really confused, if anyone can help me with that it'd be much appreciated. Second, I need some insight on what is good software. As of right now I'm currently running a free version of FL Studios and its a little confusing but I kinda know what I'm doing. Third, if anyone would like to partner up and create music with me that'd be great. Even though i just started this, I've been doing stuff like this for a long time. I've messed with my moms Garage Band and I play multiple instruments. I'm also quite creative. Now to get on with the real stuff. I'm on Soundcloud (i have been for a long time, but i haven't posted anything until recently). If whoever reads this can follow me that'd be great. M y name is Dj Cozzy. I'm really looking for people to spread my name around. So basically, follow me PLEASE, and if you want to pair up, that would be awesome.

Thanks!

Well I can appreciate the post (I think). Instead of just saying npcf, I will actually try and help you.

1. If Fl Studio is what DAW you've chosen, I would run with that. There is a plethora of information and tutorials all over the web, YouTube is a good start to begin learning how to use it. Learns the basics of it and then begin learning new techniques as you encounter new types of sound you wish to create. The only way to learn is to practice, so start now.

1a. Don't worry about investing any money into equipment right now until you're sure you want to pursue this. But when you do, check out the subforums here at DSF. You can learn what types of keyboards, monitors etc people recommend.

2. Maybe try and find someone at your similar level of producing who wants to learn with you. Honestly it'd be best if you have a buddy locally who wants to learn with you.

3. Knowing how to navigate a computer and the internet will definitely prove helpful. Having a history and experience with musical instruments will be beneficial for general melody production, as you most likely understand that most times, your music needs to be in key to create rhythm. Also you probably understand general chord progression and song arrangement, which is good. Plus, you state you're creative; That's 90% of production in my opinion. Learning to hone your creative skills and learning when to take a break when you're having a mental block is also important as well.

4. As far as Soundcloud goes, I'd recommend paying for the Lite subscription so you can add your music into as many groups as you'd like. Also you can update and replace your songs when you edit them, which is huge.

5. Overall, just start producing and being active on forums and on Soundcloud and make friends who enjoy your music.

Good Luck

Thanks. This is quite helpful:)
1.) Do you know of any good paid software (because I can't save and open up my music again)
2.) I've had people tell me the same thing about controllers and stuff like that. They said that a MIDI keyboard would be good for bigginers, what's your opinion on that?
3.) I have the free version of soundcloud, how much time does that give me?

Thanks.

If you already know Fl studio a bit Id stick with it and have a look at the paid packages, Fl also gives you free updates for life which will save you a ton in the long run.
Midi keyboards are great for getting ideas down quickly and constructing melodies but their by no means essential. Personally I think its better to buy equipment as and when you need it as you'll have a better idea of what you want it to do.
The free version give you 2 hours so its plenty, you probably wont want to upgrade for a long time unless your posting DJ mixes as well.

first of all what you are doing is producing, not dj'ing. so i'd stop referring it to deejaying. you can by all means make tunes under the name DJ whatever but deejays play records, producers make the music on the records

other than that pretty much what he said ^ having gear like midi keyboards and MPC:s is fun, its a great laugh playing with them and they at times can speed up the workflow and make producing more interesting but i'll tell you a lot of producers just program their shit with a keyboard and mouse. so they are not essential at all

fruity loops is a great DAW that many of the established producers use as well but if you'd like to try the stuff out yourself without paying anything i'd suggest reaper by cockos ltd. it's free and excellent, i used it for 2 yrs before changing to ableton

Thanks guys. I checked out Reaper and it looks really interesting. I'll probably get it. It says it has limited places to put music into though. How much can you put in?

Nothing limited about Reaper.
What does limited places to put music into even mean?
