Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 2012?
Inspired by some of the recent threads, I decided it was time for a serious poll about the question.
You are free to discuss of course. The Poll will end on 22/12/12

I would mind.
Life is great even when it sucks.

I voted No, but I'm not sure at all either.
On the one end, I agree with Electric Head: life is good because it is all there is. 'The dead know only one thing, it is better to be alive'. On the other hand, I would be at peace with it if it was 'the world' in its entirety that was ending. At least all the bastards who deserve it will go down with me. Finally, all discrimination would be over with and all men would be equal in this life or the next.
It's not an easy choice that's for sure.

if i was dead why would i mind? (if we are to assume all religions are wrong)
if you mean the world ends up like mad max or w/e... i dunno, societal pressures that make my current life stress would go away so yeah... still no.
and if religion is correct, then yes, i mind loads.

Re: Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 20
Sorry if this sounds horribly impersonal and shallow but I didn't even factor in anyone but myself in that question.
I am happy and enjoy life because of my immediate surroundings and life experiences.
I honestly couldn't care less about anyone else in the context of that question.
Sure we all want to be caring and sensitive to the worlds issues and problems but in the larger scheme of things we are all self-serving.
With that being said and ignoring everything but my own personal interests, I wouldn't want the world to end.
However, if we are factoring in all the worlds problems, what would the point be of it all ending?
Nothing would have changed, it would just be an end.
Learning from any and all previous mistakes would not happen.
Wishing the world to end as a means of ending the worlds problems just seems totally counter intuitive.

Again, children of men style, how would you feel now knowing that the world would end. It's about being alive now knowing that it will all end, and not just you but all of humanity, and to Joe's point all life. I'd like life (and humanity) to continue.
Re: Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 20
If the general public knew it was going to end without a doubt, it would be hell on earth. I'd rather be surprised by it than see the world descend into a rapey riot fest (which would undoubtably happen)

Well that is crucial to my question. We are not talking about some dystopian or anarchic future world (like mad max) which all of them preppers on Nat Geo are talking about. We are talking about the end of existence for all.
It really is a subjective matter. I can imagine for someone who has just started a family of their own (or simply has kids), the propsect of them not having a life after you could seem horrendous.
I also agree that, my explanation of the world ending 'solving all problems' is flawed, I suppose the reason I said that was more in a sense of IF this is going to happen, at least it would be a comforting thought that we would all be equally 'fucked', regardless of how you answered to the poll question.

Dead minds don't mind.

i love the use of 'Would you mind' in this context. It's a pretty mild emotion for quite a serious event
Re: Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 20
how serious though? Maybe in the grand scale of things, the ending of this universe is a mere footnote?murky21 wrote:i love the use of 'Would you mind' in this context. It's a pretty mild emotion for quite a serious event

Re: Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 20
well in the scheme of things relevant to me, the ending of the universe is pretty serious (obviously)
The chances of the end of the universe being 'a mere footnote' are pretty fucking slim in my book

Re: Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 20
just put this in the other thread.
what i like about all of this, is that regardless of what happens, those cheeky mayans/aztecs/olmecs have ensured that we use this date to mark the end of an epoch. be it of galactic importance, or just a significant historical refernce date we refer back to....
I'm hoping /intending that come the 22nd/ janurary/2013, our bi-polar world sits it's self down on the chair and has a good talk with it's self to figure out what psychological issues are holding us back.

Re: Would you mind if all life on Earth ended in December 20
Because as someone who doesn't hold a religion existence should be your main goal. Exist, for as long as physically possible. We have no heaven or hell. When your dead, your dead. That to me is the importance of life, existence.Nevalo wrote:this.cryptical wrote:if i was dead why would i mind? .

I would hate all of life to be wiped out. I voted no. But if it did at least we all go together eh?
