Why else release an artists who has stated before to be largely disconnected from what is happening in the contemporary UK music scene.

Listening to these tunes over the last hour or so, I have to say they've grown already on me. I think this is on par with Street Halo (not Kindred, not by a long shot for me). But I see Burial making choices I personally don't agree with, that is something completely new to me. In fact, I don't think I've ever doubted his choices at all before, didn't even come up in my mind. Now I'm thinking stuff like why are there cowbells in this bit (middle section Rough Sleeper), and why did he push that shit all the way to the background when it could have been a straight up banger ala speedball?

I still think this is his most uneventful material to date, but it is still quality I'll give him that.
Do you think this release could be tied in with a possible future album..or is that just a pipe dream a this point b/c they did at first call it a single, which to me usually refers to a full album though not always Im sure..

Nah, singles are pretty standard for electronic music.

I'm glad they've grown on you, as I think they're both completely brilliant, but I'm still going to disagree with you on the relationship between his releases and Hyperdub's artistic direction. For instance, the tracks on Street Halo are all focused around house, as opposed to garage IMO. He apparently produced them years ago(like 05'/06' I think?), but they werent released until house was the dominant tempo/sound that Hyperdub was putting out.

Fast forward to Kindred. It was completely off-kilter. All three tracks had a unique sound to them, and the first time we saw his music get released in that 'sketch" format. Released at the beginning of a year that was definitely Hyperdub's most diverse to date.

If anything, I think Burial's statement, that he's disconnected from the greater dance scene continuum is more related to trends, and not how his releases turn out on Hyperdub.

EDIT:
bcwarlock wrote:Im pretty new to this forum but I have to say that I never was aware of how many people disliked Ashtray Wasp which seems to be the template for this releases track structuring. To me it is still the best Burial track, followed by this release and massive attack collab..... it is almost like a classical piece or a symphony or some shit....next level for sure, but thats just my take on it:)
For sure. The man is writing electronic symphonies. Each snippet is drawn together, sometime by static, sometimes by the drums, and sometimes by the melodies.

Ultraspatial: not ignoring you, but I think my response to joeki works for yours as well.

I think they're calling it single cuz that's what they want to sell it as. An A-side and a B-side. Rather have people interpret it as an 'EP' because it's essentially different songs stitched together.

Edit: and god, let's not overstate what he's doing here. They're not "symphonies" or "pieces". They're different songs that are edited together. You know.. prog. rock.. math rock, etc? Or your standard metal song? Just because it isn't verse-chorus-verse or intro-build up-drop song structure doesn't mean he's breaking bariers.

I agree with Genevieve, calling these symphonies would be a little bit Mary Ann Hobbs like.

I'd say hardcore more than metal, but yeah, this

can't believe people think this and kindred are "cheesy"

just goes to show that we all have different interpretations of cheese... to me, almost all metal is cheesy so go figure, lol

This. About as far away from cheese as you can get IMO.

What makes it a lil cheesy is the different phrases and how Burial put them together. It doesn't feel like a complete idea, it worked in Ashtray Wasp but here especially in Truant it doesn't working well (for me). News flash, I fell in love with Rough Sleeper. :D

feel like this could have been a really really strong EP if he'd developed some of the sections into full tunes instead of chopping them up every two minutes

i guess it's kinda cool if he was doing it to be like pirate radio or whatever but it doesn't quite work for me

probably still gona buy the vinyl though

What makes you think that's cheesy though dude? I don't know of anybody else that's doing that, that's the complete opposite of cheese!

Not knocking you, just wondering what you mean.

RELEVANT INPUT: burial is one of the few electronic music producers whose tracks I can "sing" in my head from beginning to end.

Also, this release is the opposite of cheese.

I thought it was based on his & Kode 9's method for picking tracks for his releases. Where he'd send Kode 9 a 10/15 minute long montage of track snippets & Kode 9 would pick the ones he thought were strongest and Burial would develop them into full tracks.

I think Truant/Rough Sleeper is a great release. Much prefer it to anything off Kindred, but I hope Burial does still release more fully formed tunes in the future as well as these longer pieces.

as much as i like the self titled and untrue albums i actually think his stuff works better in this 'long track' format.

really enjoying this ep as well as kindred. the uplifting synth pad bit that comes in at 6mins in truant after the heavy bass bit is so good. it's like burial prog lol

I don't know how I feel about this EP yet.
The first 4 minutes of Truant are very spot on for me.

From 10 minutes on it's a clusterfuck if you ask me, switching to much, but I would have liked a development on that dark them.

I'll let it grow a bit and give it some time.

They could have put a 50 seconds Feral Witchchild for maximum trolling, I would have laugh.
