Considering a producing alias change

Post by tigsheb22 » Sat Dec 15, 2012 10:17 pm

I've been producing under the name Musslo since I started producing, which was this time last year. Since it was what I started on there was a lot of bad productions tied to it and this past year was basically just finding the style I like to produce

I want to change to 'Alkhemia', it has a great meaning behind it and suits the style I make (deep dubstep) But I already have 500+ followers who know me as Musslo and an Artist Highlight on a well known blog in the scene and my 2 releases are under the name Musslo, I'm also well known with the producers I like, but they know me as Musslo

Just looking for some guidance really, should I go through with it? What precussions might there be which I haven't thought of? Or what benefits would there be?

Thank you for your time guys :W:

Change it to Alkhemia, and if you got much better you'll have your previous followers and then some. If you're making a new page, direct them from your old page by uploading tracks on both pages the first month but putting Alkhemia - whateverthetrackscalled, then ditch musslo. if you're on the same page,no problem.

Ahh I know the feeling. There's some seriously bad stuff of mine from several years ago floating round on the net, but I think it's too late for me to change. I figured that not enough people really know about the bad stuff so I should be ok, I don't think it puts too many people off listening to my newer bits but I can never be sure really.

Yeah man I get you, truth be told you were the one who pushed me to the deeper sounds, Gravity Wave made me want to find out how to make stuff like that and from that I found the deeper, darker stuff

I think I am going to change, new start for 2013 and hopefully lots more bigger things will come

I don't think the name matters, i mean Soulstep ain't exactly the best name
but when i see how many people are ripping off the music, playing it on spotify or actually buying and supporting it... forget changing
worry about getting people to your name, not how it sounds imo

I'm going to make an argument in favour of keeping it.

You can delete shit productions?

Hopefully your productions will continue to get better, then will you want a new name again?

To me, Musslo is more memorable than Alkhemia, because I don't know what either of them mean.

Name changes might be better reserved for changes in style, side projects, and at a label's request.

Alkhemia can still be used as a name of an album or dope tune.

Would a label prefer to sign a name with successful releases?

I have some horrid stuff lingering on my page, but that said im not very popular really. Either way i dont think its bad to have old material sitting around. For me personally i think it shows i got much much better within a year. I also think listeners will appreciate seeing that you were once a human being if you know what i mean :6:

As for adopting a new name, you can do that in soundcloud, and people that care will not care. If you think its going to be massive cockup somehow, just open a baby-account and if it runs real well upgrade that to lite or whatever instead of your 'main'. I have a second name for ambient recently and its a bit of a relief, also because of group posting.

All the shit on my page has just been changed to private. and I keep the newer tunes which i am happy with public.

You can change your soundcloud name anyhow without making a new account.

I went from 'ComfiStile' to what I am now - 'Comfi' and retained whatever followers I had

I have a thread here discussing the track, and offering you the chance to remix it, more details in thread! See what you can come up with!

I dont think a name is all that important until you find your own sound/start making tracks you are truly happy and confident to share with people.

I hastily chose my previous name (Darkmatter) before, a: being able to put together a coherent piece of music, and b: researching the name, joined up here to find there were allready 2 or 3 Darkmatters in Dubstep alone, never mind other genres.

Unless of course, you come up with something you know feels right for you, otherwise I would just concentrate on music rather than rack my brains over an alias.

meh! do what makes you happy!
though tbh a name is just something you identify with..
as immerse already said.. anyone who has the old will surely follow you along your journey!
cheers
